The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a project editor with responsibility for researching, analyzing, distilling, and presenting information either in a variety of fields or, with a broad and nonspecialized approach, in a single field and to serve as a team leader within the AU Press publications system.

Duties

Plans and prepares new texts and revises existing ones. Manages individual or serial publications from initial conception and content determination through to distribution, and Coordinates the activities of other publishing personnel. Under the direction of the deputy director of the Air University Press, the specialist is responsible for the planning, coordination, and implementation of information technology (IT) requirements for Press operations. Assists subject-matter experts to meet required publication standards.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Administrative and Management Positions, Writing and Editing Series 1082 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-11, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of effective writing and editing, which includes standard word usage, syntax, parallel construction, transition, sentence structure, spelling, capitalization, syllabication, grammar, abbreviation, punctuation, indexing, and format as needed to compose documents and to ensure continuity and lucidity of complex subject matter for formal publication. Knowledge of research methods and techniques, use of primary and secondary source material, and the various finding aids appropriate to traditional and on-line library/archives, as needed to locate and identify subject matter sources, document sources properly, verify content, and select supporting information. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in­-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of effective writing and editing, which includes standard word usage, syntax, parallel construction, transition, sentence structure, spelling, capitalization, syllabication, grammar, abbreviation, punctuation, indexing, and format as needed to compose documents and to ensure continuity and lucidity of complex subject matter for formal publication. 2. Knowledge of research methods and techniques, use of primary and secondary source material, and the various finding aids appropriate to traditional and on-line library/archives, as needed to locate and identify subject matter sources, document sources properly, verify content, and select supporting information. 3. Knowledge of military subject matter areas and related terminology such as airpower doctrine and strategy, national and military strategy and doctrine, military history and leadership, deployment of forces, logistics, weapon development and technology, international relations, and current events as needed to understand projects and establish rapport with authors. 4. Knowledge of and skills in, effective research, writing, and editing for formal publication (level approximates that required for postgraduate degree). Practical knowledge of word processing software as used to develop manuscripts for publication. 5. Skill in fact-finding techniques to gather and verify factual information and to write and edit materials such as reports, articles, pamphlets, scripts, or speeches. Skill in written and oral communication, both for preparing manuscripts for formal publication. 6. Knowledge of information technologies and ongoing innovations in this area; ability to troubleshoot, conduct limited repair, and maintain computer equipment, operating systems, and applications software. Knowledge of, and ability to, write scripts, macros, and other computer code using CASE (computer assisted software engineering) tools to develop and maintain AU Press web site, monitor usage, and to automate tasks; knowledge of effective writing and editing, which includes standard word usage, syntax, parallel construction, transition, sentence structure, spelling, capitalization, syllabication, grammar, abbreviation, punctuation, indexing, and format as needed to compose documents and to ensure continuity and lucidity of complex subject matter for formal online publication. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
