The Materials Handler - Food Service Worker, WG-6907-5 position in Nutrition & Food Services (NFS) has the primary purpose to ensure quality food and service is being provided to our patients. Employees in this position are required to work irregular tours of duty in a variety of work assignments in the food production and service environment.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Independently, orders subsistence and supply items from outside sources accurately within constraints established by the menu, manpower, and the budget. Consults NFS Production Manager only as indicated and assists NFS Production Manager with writing Subsistence and Supply specifications necessary for procurement. Receives and verifies subsistence and supplies from VA and non-VA sources. Ensures items received are not damaged and are in compliance with specifications, quantity, and quality as specified on shipping and receiving invoice. Verifies accuracy of receipt ticket and checks, dates and initials obligation copy and authorizes receipt on delivery copy for supply. Marks all received subsistence, local delivery foods and supplies with date of receipt prior to storage. Issues and delivers specific quantity of food and supplies as specified in recipes or requests by the Food Production and Service Supervisors. Issues and rotates stock on first in first out system (FIFO). Loads and unloads delivery truck. Ensures an adequate quantity of food and supplies are kept in stock rooms, freezers, and coolers using data from menus, inventories, and census. Work is performed in non-mechanized secure storage areas and freezers. Cleans and organizes all stock areas according to regulations. Performs all clerical duties incidental to the receipt and issue of subsistence and supplies according to guidelines. Prepares and maintains current and accurate daily/monthly inventory of subsistence and supplies. Includes receipt date of all items on inventory. Daily communicates excess and/or low levels of inventory to Production Manager. Drives truck on a relief basis, when assigned, to deliver food carts to patients using a gas operated truck that is equipped with a hydraulic lift used to load and unload delivery carts carrying food trays. Provides assistance to cooks in food preparation area as assigned. Assists on tray line and in diet office as needed. Works with Dietetic students, as assigned, teaching them the procedures followed for procuring, receiving, and storing subsistence and supplies. A Class D driver's license is necessary for motor vehicle operations. Work Schedule: 5 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. or 8:00am - 4:30 Monday thru Friday, subject to change based on the needs of the facility. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Performs duties that require standing, stooping, bending, lifting, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions on hard surfaces. Required to work at a fast pace for long periods of time. Frequently lifts 30 pounds and carries materials and equipment occasionally that weigh up to 45 pounds. Heavy items are lifted or moved with the assistance of material handling equipment or the help of other food service workers. Work is preformed inside and outside on open docks and in storage areas. Work in areas where it is hot, cold, damp, and drafty, in temperature extremes, noise and hazard characteristic of an institutional kitchen. Is exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, and burns. There are hazards of slipping on wet floors and contact with patients with contagious diseases. Driver's License Requirement: A current, valid state-issued Driver's License is required for this position. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package.
