A materials handler is responsible for the physical movement of goods and materials to and from storage areas, loading docks and vehicles. Their primary duty is to ensure the smooth, efficient and safe handling of materials throughout the supply chain process. Materials handlers use a variety of equipment, such as forklifts and pallet jacks, to transport materials to their designated areas. They also maintain accurate records of inventory and report any discrepancies, damages or quality issues to management.
Materials handlers work in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, distribution, construction and retail. They must have good attention to detail and be able to follow safety procedures and guidelines. A high school degree or equivalent is typically required for this position, along with on-the-job training. A materials handler can advance to a supervisory or managerial role with experience and additional training.
