The Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Generalist) will be tasked with maintaining efficient workflow in the General Diagnostic section, distributes workload and assignments to Diagnostic staff, ensuring timely completion of required duties. Analyzes organizational, technical, and administrative problems and develop/implements solutions that result in efficient section operation. Consults and apprises Radiology Supervisor of problems that arise and makes recommendations for a solution.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Performs the full spectrum of radiographic and fluoroscopic examinations in a tertiary care facility with an active spinal cord, nursing home, hospice, polytrauma unit, heart, and liver transplant services.
Performs radiographic procedures using the proper exposure techniques, including manual and photo times exposures. These exams are preformed using exposure tables, digital cassettes, buckies, collimators, grids, and other technical aids to produce radiographs of diagnostic quality with the minimum of retakes.
Sets up the x-ray room assuring sterile supplies, contrast materials, catheters, and other required equipment are present and laid out.
Positions patient according to type of study, considering patient's physical characteristics, as well as patient's comfort and or ability. Identifies trauma patients and uses appropriate modifications in imaging techniques and employs proper precautions to assure patient safety and comfort.
Provides guidance and training for new employees to include orientation to Diagnostic area, policy overview, protocol overview, and Diagnostic competencies.
Ensures the section has adequate supplies and notifies Radiology Supervisor of any discrepancies
Works with Supervisor to ensure adequate in-house coverage for the Diagnostic Section on all tours to include nights and weekends

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R).
Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).]
English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Grade Determinations: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level of GS-08, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Ability to provide technical oversight and assign personnel and tasks to be accomplished in a manner that assures completion of the workload utilizing the personnel to the greatest advantage thus providing the optimal level of patient care within the workday.
Ability to plan, direct, and distribute work assignments to DRTs at lower grade levels.
Skill in instructing and training DRTs on newly acquired equipment.
Ability to plan and project staffing needs.
Skill to independently perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations.

Physical Requirements: The physical demand of the work includes Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over, moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability to stand and work while wearing lead apron for long periods of time.
