You will serve as a NUCLEAR ENGINEER in the Nuclear Quality Division (Code 2350) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Duties
You will inspect and approve equipment, material, and procedures within the scope of Welding Standards documents specifically designated by the Naval Sea Systems Command.
You will communicate directly with NA VSEA and NAVSEA Technical Representatives on matters concerning NDT, welding, component inspections, etc.
You will oversee the Shipyard Quality Assurance Systems for nuclear and nuclear related work to assure that NAVSEA requirements are met on matters concerning non-destructive testing (NDT) inspection methods.
You will aid, assist, and provide technical consultation to the shipyard departments/divisions on matters concerning welding and nuclear nondestructive testing.

- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- Incumbent may be required to perform duties within or around radiological work areas and is expected to have the ability to meet and maintain medical and training requirements for this type of work (i.e. Radiation Worker)
Qualifications
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
A professional education is required from a four-year program that leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, from an accredited university.
One or more years of experience in fabrication, construction and repair of reactor plant fluid/structural systems
Advanced knowledge of the standard and most recent technological developments related to non-destructive, welding and brazing.
Broad technical knowledge of material, fabrication and installation work involved with Naval Nuclear Work repair.
Experience communicating effectively both orally and in writing
Experience interpreting structural and mechanical drawings, reading and understanding technical engineering specifications and instructions.
Experience analyzing the work performance and the product through application of engineering principles to ascertain compliance with specifications in RT, UT, PT, MT, VT and ET and generic material identification and metallographic inspections and welding to NAVSEA specifications 250-1500-1, T9074-AD-GIB-010/1688, S9074-AR-GIB-010/278 and MIL-STD-1689.

Education
Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:
Successful completion of a professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A (above). Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Ordinarily, there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.
