About the Position: Serve as a crew member engaged in the collection of floating debris. Works on either of the 100-foot drift collection boats and/or 50-foot debris boat missioned to remove and dispose of floating debris and other navigational hazards from waters of the San Francisco Bay, including its harbors and channels. Relocation and Recruitment incentives, including student loan repayment, may be offered to highly qualified candidates.

Duties

Operate crane mounted on ship's foredeck as well as hydraulic track-mounted crane on land to load debris truck box or barge. Lift debris nets averaging 15 tons when full of debris, and many awkward shapes, sizes and materials ranging from one to fifteen tons. Pull large logs varying in length and secures them together as a raft to be floated and towed to shore. Rig loaded nets for removal from debris well on drift collector, and large debris and nets from deck to shore. Collect debris consisting of timbers, boxes, Crates, miscellaneous logs, rafts, barges, boats, and animal/vegetable matter. Perform as Quartermaster in operating the ship to relieve the Master Mate. Participate in maintenance work such as washing, cleaning, sanding, chipping, scraping, and painting boats.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is covered under the DA/USACE Random Drug Testing program based upon operation, navigation, steering, directing or sailing a surface vessel where the vessel is 26 feet in length or greater (USACE-Specific Criterion).
  • A pre-employment physical is required and annually.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Incumbent will be subject to working in various kinds of inclement weather, such as fog and may work in dangerous conditions around equipment.

Work is performed in all kinds of weather. Incumbent is exposed to injuries from traffic collisions in navigation channels, especially during foggy weather. There is danger of drowning from slipping and falling overboard. Debris collected is oily, dirty, wet, and possibly contaminated (i.e., occasionally required to collect decomposed bodies found in the bay). Subject to bodily injury from debris falling out of nets; crushing by steel net against side of derrick boat and from revolving crane or during repair and maintenance tasks.
