The position is located under the Division of Medical Services, Inpatient Services, and serves as a Supervisory Nurse Practitioner (Emergency Medicine) in the Emergency Department, which involves performance of related health and medical care services to patients in hospitals, health centers, clinics, or other designated health care facilities. Position is located in Phoenix, AZ.

Duties

Serves as the Deputy Chief of the Emergency Department and provides direct supervision over the Emergency Department Nurse Practitioners. Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, sets and adjusts short-term priorities, and prepares schedules for completion of work and assigns work to subordinates based on priorities. Assists with the direction of the activities of the Emergency Department in accordance with the objectives of the Indian Health Service; administrative policies of the Phoenix Indian Medical Center and the Phoenix Area Indian Health Service; established criteria of The Joint Commission, and accepted national standards. Interviews and examines patients, reviews past medical history, and requests and/or performs diagnostic tests and examinations deemed necessary to obtain all possible information related to each case. Proficient in performance of procedures common to the practice of Emergency Medicine such as reduction small and large dislocated joints, foreign body removal in eye, ear and skin; laceration repair with suture, staples, adhesive and steri strip; needle thoracotomy; lumbar puncture; tonometry; moderate sedation; electrocardiogram (EKG) and x-ray interpretation.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): All applicants must meet all the basic requirements: Education: A graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited professional nursing educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained OR Possess a degree from Foreign Nursing School and possess an Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools. Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Additional Education Requirements for Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: For Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions, applicants must possess a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position. Areas of specialties for positions include, but are not limited to, Acute Care, Anesthesia, Community Health, Family, Geriatric, Home Health, Midwifery, Neonatal, Oncology, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Allergy and Immunology, Women's Health, Cardiovascular, Dermatology, Occupational Health, Orthopedic, Respiratory, or other specialties identified for the position. Additional License Requirements for Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: Applicants for Advanced Practice Nurse positions must be licensed or registered by a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, GS-0610-13:Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples Include: Provide leadership, planning, and implementation of emergency medicine advanced practice nursing care duties, such as determining emergency medical condition, triage, recording health history based on physical examination, medical diagnosis, and diagnostic tests then to formulate a treatment plan by setting priorities, preparing schedules and work assignments. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
