Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, Del Rio Sector, Eagle Pass North Station, located in Eagle Pass, TX.
Duties
This position allows you to use your knowledge and experience to assist with overseeing automotive maintenance and repair including a full range of operational and administrative functions.
This position starts at an hourly rate of $27.89 (WL-10, Step 1) to $32.54 (WL-10, Step 5).
The Automotive Mechanic Leader plans, schedules, directs and supervises the work performed by Automotive and Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanics, Workers and Helpers, Tools and Parts Attendants, Transportation Assistants and Student Aids; assisting in coordinating training of subordinates, enforcing disciplinary and safety regulations, review of completed work and maintaining housekeeping. Duties and responsibilities include:
Assisting the Automotive Mechanic Supervisor in accomplishing the maintenance, repair, and/or complete overhaul of various types of government-owned vehicles.
Providing recommendations and giving technical advice on automotive repairs.
Reporting the status and progress of work, including servicing and repair needs, equipment needs, and condition of equipment.
Planning, assigning, directing, and reviewing work of non-supervisory employees in the same or related occupations.
Providing on the job training for subordinate employees.
Qualifications
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
To minimally qualify for the WL-10 grade level, you must meet the Screen-Out Elements:
Ability To Lead Or Supervise
To meet Screen-Out Elements, you should have experience performing the following duties:
Troubleshooting, tears down, repairing, reassembling, and overhauling transmissions, differentials and other train components, front and rear wheels, axles and wheel bearings, relining and adjusting brakes;
Repairing alternators and overhauling distributors, generators, starter motors, switches, lights and wiring;
Leading three or more employees in the sector automotive maintenance and repair program and, in the absence of the Automotive Mechanic Supervisor;
Providing on-the-job training for subordinate employees, enforcing safety regulations, obtaining materials or information from supervisor to relay to subordinate employees;
In addition to the experience described above, you will be evaluated on the basis of your overall level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities) in the following areas:
Knowledge of equipment, assembly, installation, repair, etc.
Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
Use of measuring instruments
Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.
Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.

Probationary Period: All employees new to the federal government must serve a one year probationary period during the first year of his/her initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period.
