Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, Del Rio Sector, Eagle Pass North Station in Eagle Pass, TX.
Duties
The position is located at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (USBP). The incumbent assists with overseeing the sector's automotive maintenance and repair program, including the full range of operational and administrative functions.
This position starts at a salary of $31.65 (WL-10, Step 1) to $36.93 (WL-10, Step 5) with promotion potential to $36.93 (WL-10 Step 5).
As an Automotive Mechanic Leader, your typical job assignments will include:
Leading three or more employees in the sector automotive maintenance and repair program and, in the absence of the Automotive Mechanic Supervisor, assuming responsibility, including the full range of operational and administrative functions.
Providing on-the-job training for subordinate employees, enforcing safety regulations, obtaining materials or information from supervisor to relay to subordinate employees, resolving minor complaints or refers those of a more serious nature to higher authority, monitoring progress of and reviews completed work assignments, and ensuring good housekeeping practices.
Repairing alternators and overhauls distributors, generators, starter motors, switches, lights and wiring.
Troubleshooting, tearing down, repairing, reassembling, and overhauling transmissions, differentials and other train components, front and rear wheels, axles and wheel bearings, relining and adjusting brakes.
Qualifications
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
To minimally qualify for the WL-10 grade level you must meet the Screen Out Element:
Experience leading the work performed by Automotive and Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanics, Workers, and Helpers WG-5 through WG-10, Tool and Parts Attendants, Transportation Assistants, and Student Aides.
To meet the screen out element, you should haveexperience performing the following duties:
Operating, and installing of all components, assemblies, and systems vehicles such as engines, transmissions, front end and rear end assemblies, power steering and braking mechanisms, and air-conditioning, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
Removing and disassembling major components and assemblies, such as engines and transmissions, and to rebuild, adjust, re-install, align and mesh such components and assemblies.
Programing on-the-job training and orientation for mechanics, helpers, and student aides.
Using various types of hand and power tools, testers and gauges, e.g., test stands, oscilloscopes, engine and analyzer scopes, compression gauges, special feeler and dial gauges, exhaust analyzers, and engine and chassis dynamometers.
Failure to meet these Screen out Elements will result in an ineligible rating.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Working for the U.S. Government as a federal civilian or as a member of the military

Working as a contractor, intern, consultant or volunteer supporting the U.S. government
Probationary Period: All employees new to the federal government must serve a one year probationary period during the first year of his/her initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period.
