These positions, located at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia, serve in the position of swimming pool lifeguard (Recreation Aid) for the outdoor pool. These positions are intended to be seasonal hires for the brief duration of pool season.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** NOTE: These are TEMPORARY appointments (not-to-exceed 3 months). The appointment may be renewed for additional service in accordance with Agency needs for 1 additional year. Temporary positions offer health insurance (if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days) but do not offer life insurance or retirement benefits and may be terminated at any time before the expiration date. The appointment to a Temporary position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. Duties include but are not limited to: Maintains interior of pool cleanliness by vacuuming daily; Performs pH and chlorine measurements and takes water temperature daily prior to opening area; Monitors weather conditions and lightening meter and follows established safety procedures for determining if weather is conducive for opening or closing the pool; Enforces swimming pool rules on safety, conduct, and cleanliness; Enforces social distancing and ensures all equipment is wiped down after use; Checks locker rooms and restrooms periodically for needed cleaning and to ensure safety of patrons; and Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Sunday through Saturday, 11:00am to 7:30pm; Lifeguards will work schedules that vary to include evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Qualifications

English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. -AND- These positions include two Selective Placement Factors (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration. The Selective Placement Factors for these positions are: You must hold a current Red Cross lifesaving certificate AND a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate. You must submit copies of your certifications with your application to receive credit. -AND- In addition to meeting the English Language Proficiency and Selective Placement Factors, to qualify for this position at the GS-2 level, you must meet one of the following requirements: Experience: You must have at least three (3) months of general experience in (1) any type of work that demonstrates your ability to perform the work of the Recreation Aid - Lifeguard, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. -OR- Education: Successfully completed high school graduation or the equivalent. NOTE: A copy of your high school diploma and/or transcript must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: ClericalCustomer ServiceTechnical Competence IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements & Work Environment: The position involves moderately heavy liftin when needed to assist people using the swimming pool area. Employee must be able to swim and be physically able to work independently. The position works in the outside swimming pool area including the pool-house area at the Medical Center. The employee is expected to comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), medical center, and service policies and procedures regarding standard precautions against exposure to contagious infections, and bloodborne diseases, work area hazards, and chemical hazards.
