The incumbent will service in the position of swimming pool lifeguard (Recreation Aid), for the Martinsburg VAMC outdoor swimming pool. The incumbents assigned are direct reports to the Recreation Therapy Supervisor and intended to be seasonal hires for the brief duration of pool season and intended to be less than a year in nature. Incumbent is responsible for assuring the overall safety of patients utilizing the swimming pool.
Duties
Major Duties:
Enforce all swimming pool rules.
Maintains interior of pool cleanliness by vacuuming daily.
Completes regular inspections to maintain locker rooms and restrooms for cleanliness and ensure safety.
Performs Ph and chlorine measurements, water temperature daily prior to opening area.
Monitors weather conditions and lightening meter and follows established safety procedures for determining if weather is conducive for opening or closing the pool.
Enforces social distancing and ensures all equipment is wiped down after use.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Sunday - Saturday, 11:00am - 7:30pm; Lifeguards will work schedules that vary to include evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factor: Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent the minimum requirements for this position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF are ineligible for further consideration.
Holds current Red Cross lifesaving certificate.
Holds current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation certificate.
Ability to perform Ph and chlorine readings.
Ability to clean swimming pool area.
Ability to clean locker room area.
In addition to the Selective Placement Factors above, to qualify for this position at the GS-2 grade level, you must meet the following based on your experience and/or education as described below:
General Experience: Three months of general experience. General Experience: (1)Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Physical Requirements: This position involves moderately heavy lifting when needed to assist people using swimming pool area. Incumbent must be able to swim and must be physically able to work independently.
