About the Position: Performs a variety of tasks involved with the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities, and equipment.

Duties

Install, modify, repair, troubleshoot (tracing and locating defects), load and test new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment. Perform full range of plumbing tasks including estimating material requirements, i.e., pipe, fittings, and fixtures in the sizes, types, or lengths needed The type of equipment repaired varies from large 20–30-ton units to refrigerators, deep freezes, and evaporative coolers. Perform incidental carpentry and painting such as repairing sheetrock, plaster and tile walls. Repair doors and windows.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and/or credit check are required.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision such as installing, repairing, troubleshooting and testing new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment; AND performing plumbing tasks such as threading and pipe bending, determining guide lines, and placing and connecting water fixtures such as water mains and hydrants; AND installing, repairing, and troubleshooting ventilation equipment systems for heating, cooling, filtering, and circulating. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Moderate physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 20 pounds and the occasional handling of objects weighing over 50 pounds while loading and unloading cargo. Equipment requires moderate physical effort in those heavy chains, bars, hooks, etc., must be lifted and properly secured. Requirements for standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Requires considerable walking, standing on concrete floors, and climbing stairways and ladders. Light-to-moderate effort is used to turn valves and controls. Works in stretched, cramped and awkward positions. Considerable standing while working on ladders or scaffolds. Required to work inside and outside to a variety of weather conditions. Subject to exposure to dust and dirt; grease, fumes, noise, etc. Workers are also subject to cuts, burns, bruises, electrical shocks, etc. Safety equipment is provided to minimize hazards. Works in cramped quarters inside and outside. The use of personal protective equipment will be required. Working Conditions: Works inside and outside in all kinds of weather. Comes in contact with running motors, pumps, and machinery. Cuts, bruises, and broken bones may result from accidents. Subject to possible injury from vehicle accident. Works in cramped quarters inside and outside; exposed to mud and water; dirty, dusty and greasy conditions and injury from use of power and hand tools and occasional use of caustic soda and hot lead. Work environment includes exposure to intermittent noise, dust and dirt, grease and oils, and use of chemical solvents. Posted safety hazards include eye, foot and hearing hazardous areas. Safety equipment to include safety toed shoes, gloves, protective aprons, safety glasses, ear plugs and hearing protective devices are issued for hazard abatement, required for use during each actual exposure to hazardous working conditions. Working conditions are considered in the evaluation of this job and do not meet criteria for compensation by environmental or hazard pay.
