The Pathology Specialist (Pathologist Assistant) serves in the Anatomic Pathology (AP) section of the Pathology & Laboratory Medicines Services (PALMS) at the LTC Charles S. Kettles VA Medical Center, and at the Dermatology clinic locations within the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include but may not be limited to: Thorough understanding of the gross appearance of pathologic processes. Performing or requesting specialized tests including histochemical and immunohistochemical stains and cytometry. Perform renal biopsy adequacy evaluation during Radiology procedures. Staining of all types of Mohs specimens under the direction of the Mohs surgeon. Education and training of residents. Performing autopsies in rotation with residents and senior staff, under the supervision of a Pathologist. Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Basic Requirement: (required) A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Along with the above basic education requirement you must also possess the following specialized experience. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: (required) At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS 11) in Federal Service that includes performing the following duties: managing all daily surgical pathology functions under the supervision of the pathologist; maintaining regulatory compliance related to his/her duties on a daily basis; prepares work areas for inspection and/or participates in the inspection process as required; perform autopsies in rotation with residents mid senior staff. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires long period of standing while performing gross examinations and teaching others to do so, recurring bending over when performing frozen sections and autopsies, occasional lifting of heavy items (bodies), and above average dexterity in dissecting specimens and cutting frozen sections.
