About the Position: The incumbent will plan and administer the industrial hygiene program for the Mobile District engaged in a rangeof light to moderately complex industrial processes.

Duties

Plan, coordinate, and conduct detailed surveys and investigations of worksites to evaluate and formulate controls for occupational health hazards. Plans and administers the industrial hygiene program. Oversee contractors' industrial hygiene efforts, ensure contractor compliance with the industrial hygiene-related contract provisions such as: occupational exposure limits, respiratory protection, employee training and medical surveillance. Determine the levels of protection and safety protocols at hazardous waste cleanup sites. Research, develop, and provide information about potential hazards at Defense Environmental Restoration Program (DERP), Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS), USEPA Superfund sites, and asbestos and lead abatement sites. Monitor contractor compliance with OSHA regulations, DoD, Army, and USACE regulations and guidance regarding hazard analysis and accident prevention. Advise the District Commander and his staff on industrial hygiene matters. Consult with other government organizations, universities and scientific and research facilities to coordinate techniques and gathers data about evolving technology and epidemiology.

Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. OR Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. OR Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes meeting all of the following: (1) Interpreting and applying safety and occupational health standards and permissible exposure limits; (2) Planning detailed surveys and investigations of worksites to evaluate and formulate controls for occupational health hazards; (3) Identifying employees to be enrolled into and taken out of medical surveillance programs, conducting safety and occupational health training specifically noise, chemical or environmental (lead, asbestos, mold, etc.) related; (4) Developing controls and techniques to eliminate or reduce safety and environmental hazards in the workplace; (5) Developing new or modifying existing health standards to protect employees from exposure to toxic substances, harmful physical agents, and other health hazards; (6) Conducting inspection of all workplaces to assure safe working environments. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: CommunicationsStandardsTechnical CompetenceTechnical Credibility Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
