About the Position: This position is located in the Directorate of Emergency Services, Fire Protection and Prevention Division, on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.
This Position is included under the provisions of Special Recruitment Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and mandatory retirement date.
Duties
Perform firefighting duties involving burning structures, equipment, facilities, crashes and burning aircraft, wildland fires, vehicles fires, and spilled or burning of hazardous materials
Use firefighting chemicals to extinguish fires in building, vehicles and aircraft
Perform emergency fuel and engine system shut down procedures on all types of aircrafts.
Assure site protection during and after firefighting operation for fire investigation and assist in determining origin and cause of fire.
Serve as driver/operator on all emergency firefighting, aircraft crash rescue, ladder, rescue, hazardous materials response and wildland firefighting vehicles
Conduct a complete examination of the patient to determine the nature, extent, and seriousness of their condition and searches for alert symbols
Upon arrival, makes a preliminary assessment of the patient's conditions and selects from a variety of prescribed protocols the one which is in the best interest of the patient.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program and is subject to initial urinalysis testing and random drug testing thereafter.
- This position requires periodic (e.g. annual) medical examinations following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of this position
- All applicants must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.05M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
- Must successfully complete an annual Job Performance test
- Incumbent must participate in the Fire Division's Fitness and Wellness Program that includes a cardiovascular physical fitness program IAW NFPA 1583 and DODI 6055.06.
- Incumbent must wear a uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- This position requires possession of a valid state and government driver's license.
- This position is designated as Mission Essential. Incumbent will be required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, fire hazardous duty, and other emergency situations as directed by the Fire Chief.
- This position work schedule requires working 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24-hour rotating shift and may include working weekends and holidays.
- This position requires possession of a valid NREMT Paramedic license with a future date prior to appointment. You must be able to meet Washington state Paramedic certification requirements within 180 days of Appointment.
- All applicants will be required to successfully complete an annual emergency vehicle operator's course.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling and extinguishing fires; assisting with rescue operations; operating emergency vehicles and equipment and assessing patient's conditions to administer basic treatment; administering life saving measures in response to a medical emergency. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).
In addition to meeting the experience requirement above, applicants must also possess the following certifications through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M AND a State or National Registry EMT Certification Card indicating a future expiration date when applicable:
