About the Position: This position is located in the Directorate of Emergency Services, Fire Protection and Prevention Division, Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington.
Duties
Serve as a Battalion Chief of Training located within the Fire and Emergency Services Division, Directorate of Emergency Services, Installation Management Command.
Assist Division personnel in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and priorities of operations.
Provide supervision over Fire Captains, Lead Firefighters and Firefighters.
Report to the Assistant Fire Chief on all important matters, including the status of emergency situations occurring on assigned shift.
Planning, administering, coordinating, executing, and supervising the activities of fire suppression and rescue, training, medical emergencies, fire inspections and investigations.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Incumbent must be able to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb and lift 50 lbs.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
- As a "Key" position, the incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure mission accomplishment of sustaining base operations during mobilization.
- One year of Supervisory probationary period may be required.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
- Designated Mission Essential Position: applicant will be required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations and may be required to remain on duty after the official shifts ends.
- Requires possession of a valid driver's license. License requirements must not be suspended or revoked.
- Requires a Personnel Security background investigation
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
- Position requires 24-hour rotating shift with 120 hours worked per pay period.
- This position is designated as essential during inclement weather, fire, hazardous duty and other emergency operations.
- Fire Instructor III must be obtained and maintained within 12 months of appointment.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes experience: 1) Directing structural firefighting and rescue operations; 2) Responding to accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illness to administer direct patient care; 3) determining the utilization of firefighters and equipment while combating hazardous material incidents; and/or 4) Ensuring personnel and equipment are in a constant state of readiness for immediate response to firefighting, HAZMAT, and rescue operations.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Certifications: In addition to the above requirements, this position requires that the incumbent possess and maintain the following DoD IFSAC or Pro-Board issued certifications: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, Fire Inspector II, Fire Officer III, HAZMAT Incident Commander, & Fire Instructor II. You MUST submit a copy of your certifications with your application package.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade, time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
