The Therapy Supervisor oversees a multidisciplinary team of therapists in the area assigned. Responsibilities include coordinating multidisciplinary care, managing clinical operations, and providing administrative support. The role involves direct patient care and other duties as assigned. Supervision areas and therapist numbers may vary based on service and veteran needs.

Duties

Implement clinic improvement strategies to manage daily work assignments, contract staffing, and long-term planning. Supervise, evaluate, and ensure the safety of staff, addressing any issues that arise. Coordinate therapy services and provide coverage as needed to collaborate with other healthcare providers. Ensure staff use evidence-based practices for optimal patient outcomes. Continuously evaluate staff performance and competency, analyzing data to improve quality and productivity. Provide training and ensure proper use of equipment and therapies. Develop and communicate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and local policies, and train staff accordingly. Maintain a safe and clean work environment for staff. Ensure compliance with OSHA, Joint Commission, and other accrediting standards, as well as facility safety guidelines. Ensure patient confidentiality per HIPAA regulations. Review and ensure accuracy of reports from team leaders and specialists. Report findings to leadership and implement program changes to improve care and satisfaction. Set priorities, delegate tasks, and solve problems to meet deadlines and address issues. Collaborate with leadership to analyze employee productivity and performance. Conduct interviews, recommend candidates, evaluate performance, and identify training needs for staff. Work with the therapy section chief to meet performance and transitional measures. Address staff needs and resolve conflicts using interpersonal skills. Assist with clinical studies, projects, and committees as identified by the service, VISN, and VHA, including CARF and Joint Commission activities. Perform other duties as assigned by leadership. Submit equipment requests and review budget needs with the program manager/section chief. Develop and maintain interdepartmental relationships to support the medical facility's mission and goals. Represent PM&R at the VISN and national level through lectures, education, and training. Prepare for CARF and Joint Commission surveys and ensure standards are met. Serve on the Occupational Health and Safety Ergonomics committee, contributing to the Medical Center Safety Plan and workplace ergonomic assessments. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English Language Proficiency: Individuals appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C. chapters 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA must be proficient in written and spoken English. See Chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Education and experience: The individual must meet at least one of the requirements below: Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy AND five (5) years of progressively independent experience as a physical therapist. Master's degree in Physical Therapy AND two (2) years of progressively independent experience as a physical therapist. Doctorate degree in physical therapy. NOTE: Individuals must be a graduate of a Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accredited college or university. The CAPTE is the only accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to accredit entry-level physical therapy programs. Foreign Graduates: Graduates of foreign physical therapy programs meet the requirements in subparagraph 3b if they have a full unrestricted and current license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Licensure: Individuals hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. This position is above the full performance level, so there are no grandfathering provisions applicable to the qualification standards. Grade Determinations: GS- 13 Physical Therapist (Supervisory) Experience. In addition to meeting the basic requirements, one year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. Examples of the GS-12 grade level include but are not limited to: independently providing assessment and treatment interventions to inpatients and outpatients received through healthcare provider referrals and patient self-referrals. Guided by differential and movement diagnoses, PTs perform examinations and evaluations of individuals who have or may develop impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions related to conditions of the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, pulmonary, and/or integumentary systems while considering the effects attributable to unique personal and environmental factors. PTs interpret findings from examination, diagnostic studies/medical tests and, during evaluation, select appropriate clinical tests and measures, and then integrate findings into the physical therapy plan of care for the full range of patient populations. PTs establish a diagnosis within the scope of physical therapy and identify the appropriate intervention to treat and/or refer to another provider for further consultation when needed. They determine physical therapy prognosis by incorporating examination findings with the patient's preferences for meaningful level of function in order to set clinically appropriate treatment goals and optimize outcomes. Physical therapists select appropriate equipment needed to substitute for loss of function or to substitute for limited function of individuals they treat. Staff PTs at this level practice autonomously, making recommendations and referrals to other medical specialties/services as clinically indicated during ongoing assessment of patients under their care. The staff PT may also develop and provide individualized clinical training experiences for physical therapy students in facilities with established clinical experience rotations. PTs at this level may be given general assignments in any/all areas where physical therapy services are deemed necessary, and/or may serve as the sole PT at a less complex facility. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate all the following KSAs. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of contemporary physical therapy across multiple areas of practice, and the demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge to provide clinical guidance to Staff PTs within the department. Knowledge of human resources administration, including such functions as the ability to interview and select qualified applicants, monitor and evaluate performance, and maintain effective labor management relations within scope of responsibility. Ability to effectively supervise, direct, and manage a diverse physical therapy staff. Skill in forging positive interpersonal relationships and conflict resolution. Ability to analyze clinically appropriate data effectively to optimize quality, performance, and productivity within the section. Ability to set priorities, delegate tasks, and solve problems in order to meet multiple deadlines and identify/address organizational problems. Ability to manage advocacy roles and planning activities within the VA and the greater rehabilitation community. Preferred Experience: Leadership Experience: Proven track record in leading and motivating a large, diverse, multidisciplinary team of professionals across various practice settings. Collaboration Skills: Experienced in coordinating and collaborating with senior leadership teams. Data Analysis: Skilled in tracking workload, utilization, productivity, and other metrics to identify trends and implement changes. Relationship Building: Capable of fostering relationships and building coalitions within Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) and across the healthcare system. Safety and Standards Compliance: Strong understanding of High Reliability Organization (HRO) principles and just culture; committed to maintaining safety and compliance with Joint Commission and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) standards. Adaptability: Able to adapt to various challenges, adjust processes, and effectively communicate expectations to both leadership and direct reports.
