Qualifications

Joint Military Operations (JMO) Department. The JMO Department teaches two of the Naval War College's six core courses. Joint Military Operations, taught to senior-level students, is focused at the theater-strategic level and emphasizes joint military operations. Joint Maritime Operations, for intermediate level students, is focused at the operational level and emphasizes joint maritime operations. Subjects covered include the operational art, Joint Planning Process, critical thinking, decision making, the interagency, and joint, combined and multinational warfare. The curriculum is taught primarily through readings and seminar discussion. JMO faculty comprise both civilians and active-duty officers from across the U.S. military services, along with international officers and civilians from U.S. Federal agencies. Additional details regarding the Naval War College and the JMO Department curriculum can be obtained by visiting the Naval War College website at: Joint Military Operations Department (usnwc.edu) Responsibilities.Incumbent serves as the JMO Deputy Chair in the day-to-day operations of the JMO Department and acts as the Chair in their absence. Incumbent serves as the department Mission Resource Manager, monitors and approves leave for civilian faculty and U.S. Navy military faculty, supports curriculum development efforts, assists the Chair in preparation of civilian faculty performance evaluations, supervises department support personnel, acts as an Approving Officer for faculty travel, certifies civilian time and attendance records, and represents the department to numerous other college departments. Incumbent teaches the JMO course at the Intermediate and Senior Service College Levels, with duties including: conducting classroom instruction, primarily through seminars, developing curricula, reviewing and evaluating student research papers, examinations, and other written and oral assessments; advising and mentoring students and other faculty; performing educational administrative functions for the department; and performing various types of service for the College. Qualifications. Essential qualifications include: 1) An advanced degree from an accredited university in national security affairs or related field; 2) Proven experience and expertise in Joint warfare operations, maritime operational-level warfare, and theater strategic warfare with an understanding of the U.S. Navy roles and missions; and 3) Joint Professional Military Education Level I (JPME I). Candidates must be prepared to teach at the master's degree level. Desirable qualifications include an earned PhD; Joint Professional Military Education II (JPME II); Joint Qualified Officer; knowledge of maritime warfare theory, military history; experience at a Fleet Command, Combatant Command, Regional Component Command, or the Joint Staff; graduate of a service/joint advanced warfighting school; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with peers in a learning environment; demonstrated ability to create a professional seminar atmosphere to enhance student educational outcomes; and experience in various DoN/DoD administrative functions. Applicants must be U.S. citizens capable of obtaining a Department of Defense security clearance at the SECRET level. Salary Considerations. Salary is competitive and is accompanied by a generous Federal Civil Service package that includes health insurance, pension and retirement saving plans (with employer matching contributions), paid annual vacation and sick leave, and other benefits. Rank and salary are commensurate with credentials and experience in accordance with the Department of the Navy Faculty Schedule. This is a non-tenure track position. This is not a remote work position; however, the incumbent may be eligible for situational telework as determined by policy and the position requirements. The incumbent may be expected to travel on occasion.
