Performs duties as the Writing and Communications Specialist for the Center for Innovation in Education (CIE) in the Department of the Executive Director, Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT).
*This is not a Tenure Track position.
Duties
Provides writing and general communication instruction for faculty, students, and staff. Maintains the writing lab and assists all clients with writing needs; provides training and education programs on topics related to writing, assessment, teaching and learning,and speaking; and teaches communication and/or technical writing and research courses as needed for the AFIT community. Develops institutional editing standards and styles and subject matter expertise on academic writing, rhetorical strategy, and publication.
Assist students, faculty, and staff with writing on an appointment basis and with a minimum of six office hours each week. Instruct and advise students on writing a thesis/dissertation. Assist and advise faculty and staff on writing and communication needs. Collaborate with faculty to determine needs of students; respond to faculty referrals to assist students. Edit and update AFIT Thesis and Dissertation Style Guide and other institutional writing guidance as needed.
Develop and present programming (workshops, events, guest lectures, book groups, etc.) on writing and communication topics of interest for students, faculty, and staff. Design and delivery pedagogy-focused workshops, book groups, and Lunch and Learns for faculty, students and staff. Respond with appropriate training or publications to emerging communication needs of faculty, staff, and students.
Teach one section of COMM 680 / COMM 480 / or COMM 310 as needed not to exceed one course per quarter/two courses per year. Teach customized guest lectures on writing and communication topics for AFIT courses.
Maintain current data on Writing Lab use, including visitor demographics and focus areas of concern. Assess effectiveness of Writing Lab services and workshops, events, and services.
Create monthly CIE newsletter and promotional materials for workshops, events, and services. Represent the CIE and Writing Lab at AFIT all-calls and events as needed.
Collaborate regularly with other military writing and communications staff and faculty via the Writing Center Consortium for Graduate Professional and Military Education (WCCG).
Requirements

- Incumbent may be required to serve a one-year trial period.

- Initial appointment is under Schedule A appointing authority, Excepted Appointment Not-to-Exceed 3 years
- At the time of the expiration of the initial appointment an employee who adequately demonstrates professional competence can be extended in increments up to 3 years or for an indefinite period.
- An initial appointment can be allowed to expire for an employee who does not adequately demonstrate professional competence.
- The appointment cannot be converted to a permanent tenure in the competitive service.
- This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive civil service. This is an Administratively Determined position in the excepted service.

- Master's degree required. Preferred fields: English, journalism, communication, education, writing, or related fields. Ph.D. degree desirable.

Term appointment may be extended to the maximum period allowed by law without further competition. NOTE: Current federal civilian employees may apply for this position and if selected, a break in service of at least 3 days may be required prior to appointment to this position.
Incumbent may be required to travel by commercial or military conveyance (or other means of travel) to perform temporary duty.
Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Additional duties supporting the academic and administrative aspects of a military school can be assigned by school and/or university leaders.
Required Qualifications
M.S. degree in English, journalism, communication, education, writing, or related fields is required at the time of employment.
The ability to communicate clearly and expertly (in English) in both verbal and written forms concerning academic, administrative, and technical subject matters is required.
Desired Qualifications
Ph.D. degree (including coursework and/or dissertation research) related to English, journalism, communication, education, writing, or related fields at the time of employment.
Demonstrated experience in writing, editing, and instruction in a Writing Lab or similar activity supporting students and faculty in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, business and related disciplines at the graduate level.
Demonstrated experience teaching graduate level communications or writing courses.
Active involvement in relevant professional societies.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
