This position is located at the NIH Clinical Center. Physician Assistants are advance practice providers who are licensed medical professionals who hold an advanced degree and can provide direct patent care in various settings. The incumbent will serve as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team and will work with a variety of other members from the team. The incumbent is expected to work with members of the community health care team in support of the Clinical Center patient.
Duties
Perform a wide range of highly complex and novel patient care and research activities.
Perform such duties as: patient history and physical examinations; recording pertinent patient data; assessment of patients to determine the need for medical attention; review of patient records to determine health status; and the preparation of patient summaries.
Provide expert advice and assistance in the design and development of clinical and basic research studies on assigned health issues.
Assist in the examination and observation of patients by performing such duties as taking case histories, conducting physical examinations, and ordering laboratory studies during hospital rounds and clinic visits.
Assume full responsibility for, and coordinates the collection of, specimens needed for all studies on patients.
Participate in daily rounds and makes presentations at patient care conferences with a team consisting of staff physicians, members of the nursing staff, and other individuals involved in direct patient care. Keep attending physicians and nurses informed as to changes in the patients' condition and medical treatment plans.
Provide direction to nursing and other health care personnel in the implementation of clinical trials.
Receive inquiries from referring physicians, hospitals, government agencies and patients regarding eligibility for research protocols and maintains coordination and communication with these groups.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship requirement or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date.

- Work requires long periods of walking, standing, bending, and some lifting, e.g., to assist patients out of wheelchairs. Patient care requirements may demand irregular or extended tours of duty.
- The incumbent performs work in patient care areas. Gowns, gloves, and other clothing needed for isolation may be worn at times.
- The incumbent may be exposed to infectious/contagious/ disease as well as radioactive materials and biological and therapeutic agents.
- Must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician Assistant from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
- If selected, you must pass a pre-employment medical examination.
Qualifications
In order to qualify for a Physician Assistant, GS-0603 position, you must:
A. have graduated from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by The Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a College, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education; AND have successfully completed the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination; AND have maintained status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for continuing medical education (CME) and re-certification;
AND
B. possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician Assistant from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
In addition to the above, in order to qualify at the GS-13 level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience as a certified physician assistant equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: conducting physical assessments and examinations of patients; recommending treatment and therapies for patients with complex health issues; serving as a specialty consultant to nursing services and health disciplines; interviewing patients to obtain medical history, medications and previous or current infections and diseases; developing reports, charts and graphs of medical information from patient records.
