*This is a Non-Tenure Track position. Academic tenure is based upon performance and approval of the faculty and may be considered after initial or subsequent 3-year appointment period. Selectee may be offered an initial appointment with tenure if their academic credentials warrant such action. Performs Research Assistant Professor duties in the Department of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering in the Graduate School of Engineering and Management at AFIT.

Duties

Performs the following faculty duties in the Department of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering and Management, Air Force Institute of Technology: Research: Scholarly activities and professional accomplishments. Initiates and conducts a program of research in the field of specialization, which contributes to the body of knowledge. Pursues professional development through membership in professional societies and participation in conferences or other appropriate activities to maintain professional and academic currency in area of specialization. Research is defined as inquiry undertaken to establish facts, develop principles, or illuminate or answer questions within an area of intellectual pursuit through the systematic collection of evidence that can be subjected to replication, verification, or critical evaluation by persons other than the original researcher. Research activity is expected to result in peer-reviewed journal publications, invited or reviewed conference presentations and proceedings, research grants, review papers, monographs, and seminar and colloquium presentations. Faculty members are expected, over their careers, to establish and sustain sponsored research, to include funding sufficient to support their scholarly activities. Service and Administration.Service is defined as contributions and activities that promote the general welfare of the Institute, the academic discipline, the Department of Defense, and society at large. Graduate faculty members provide advice and counsel to improve the quality of educational programs. Faculty members serve internally through various departmental, School and Institute committees. They are active in School governance, assume administrative duties within the Department and mentor junior faculty members. Service includes displaying a collegial spirit of cooperation and contribution to the affairs of the Department, the School and the Institute. Faculty serve their respective disciplines by referring journal articles, conference papers and grant proposals, organizing professional conferences or sessions, as members of editorial boards, as officers of professional societies, and as members of national and/or international review boards and committees. Faculty may support teaching and curriculum development requirements to include MS and PhD level courses, and certificate courses. Additionally, they may be required to advise students and participate in research committees. Faculty contribute to the overall mission of the U.S. Air Force and Department of Defense by providing expert consultation, serving on advisory boards, and facilitating technology transfer.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

  • Employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, to include evenings, weekends and/or holidays
  • Shift work and emergency overtime may be required.
  • Employee must maintain current certifications.
  • Incumbent may be required to serve a one-year trial period.
  • Candidates are not required to have active duty service or veterans’ preference to be referred and considered. All qualified candidates who meet the recruitment assessment criteria will be referred to the selecting official.
  • The selected candidate will be subject to a security investigation leading to successful completion of a background investigation with a favorable adjudication. (1 of 2)

  • Essential qualities expected of every Research Assistant Professor include the personal attributes of integrity, industry, cooperation, initiative, and breadth of intellectual interests.
  • Travel by military or commercial transportation to gather ideas for improving the curriculum, establish research contacts and agreements, conduct research, and present results of research may be required.
  • Initial appointment is under Schedule A appointing authority, Excepted Appointment Not-to-Exceed 366-days.
  • At the time of the expiration of the initial appointment an employee who adequately demonstrates professional competence can be extended in increments up to 3 years or for an indefinite period.
  • An initial appointment can be allowed to expire for an employee who does not adequately demonstrate professional competence.
  • The appointment cannot be converted to a permanent tenure in the competitive service.
  • This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive civil service. This is an Administratively Determined position in the excepted service.
  • All federal employees are required to have direct deposit.

  • Doctoral degree is required by the time employment begins(see Qualifications for required academic disciplines)
  • Relocation costs are not authorized.

Qualifications

Conditions of Employment Continued Term appointment may be extended to the maximum period allowed by law without further competition. NOTE: Current federal civilian employees may apply for this position and if selected, a break in service of at least 3 days may be required prior to appointment to this position. Incumbent may be required to travel by commercial or military conveyance (or other means of travel) to perform temporary duty. Additional duties supporting the academic and administrative aspects of a military school can be assigned by school and/or university leaders. Qualifications An earned doctoral degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering or other closely related field of science or engineering with experience in advanced scientific and engineering programs is required before employment begins. Possesses knowledge of a wide range of defense technologies, with expert knowledge in at least one specific area of interest. Knowledge and expertise of current defense technologies, and where appropriate, defense programs at the national level including political processes, military budgeting priorities, and developing alliances between departments and agencies. Possess the ability to communicate clearly and expertly in both verbal and written forms concerning academic, administrative, and technical subject matters. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
