About the Position: Serves as the acting chief in the absence of the Chief and may be required to perform the following duties. Assisting with the implementing, coordinating, and administering of the hospital Infection Control Strategic Plan in hospital, clinics and seven Primary Care Clinics. Collaborates with the Chief of Infection Control to plan, coordinate, implement, measure and evaluate the ongoing effectiveness of the Infection Control Program. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Develop and provide educational programs, training sessions, and consultations focused on safe healthcare practices for patients with blood-borne infectious diseases and biological warfare agents (such as Smallpox and Anthrax). Foster awareness among healthcare professionals regarding infection prevention and control measures. Conduct well-designed epidemiologic investigations to assess disease patterns and identify potential outbreaks. Determine the existence of epidemics and promptly initiate appropriate control measures. Ensure strict compliance with regulatory agencies, including but not limited to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and The Joint Commission. Regularly review and update infection control policies to align with current guidelines. Implement infection control surveillance tracers across diverse clinical areas to monitor adherence to national and state standards. Perform in-person infection control audits during surgical and dental procedures. Report findings to section leadership and maintain electronic records for analysis and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must maintain current licensure in a state and maintain Basic Cardiac Life Support.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • If applicant is a registered nurse, they must maintain a valid, unrestricted license.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • Position is identified as emergency essential.
  • The work requires the employee to work evenings/nights; rotating shifts, extended hours, weekends, holidays or other schedules common to hospital operations.
  • Certification in Infection Control-CIC preferred but not required.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience for the GS-09: One year of specialized experience which includes reviewing clinically based infection control requirements/validation criteria; monitoring the infection prevention and control program; participating in the investigation of all hospital acquired infection events; and providing training to clinical staff on their infection prevention and control roles and responsibilities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education for GS-09: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Infection Prevention and Control, Patient Safety, Microbiology or similar type degree. OR Combination of Education and Experience for GS-09: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. OR Specialized Experience for the GS-11: One year of specialized experience which includes reviewing clinically based infection control requirements/validation criteria; monitoring the infection prevention and control program; participating in the investigation of all hospital acquired infection events; and providing training to clinical staff on their infection prevention and control roles and responsibilities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education for the GS-11: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Infection Prevention and Control, Patient Safety, Microbiology or similar type degree. OR Combination of Education and Experience for the GS-11: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
