Duties
Advise engineers and technical personnel on geotechnical exploration capabilities, drill hole instrumentation and testing methods, geotechnical industry standards, and drilling procedures.
Advise engineers and construction personnel on problematic site conditions such as excessive groundwater, unstable excavations, slopes, or geologic hazards.
Prepare final-design data submittals, drawings, and construction geology reports.
Document geotechnical construction activities and perform foundation mapping of geologic exposures in construction excavations, prepare supporting geologic construction documentation including maps, and reports.
Implement field investigations and aquifer testing to evaluate the groundwater and complex geologic problems of an exploration site.
Qualifications
To be eligible for consideration, you must first meet the Basic Education Requirement for this position, having:
A. Degree: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining, or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. Combination of education and experience - course work as show in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

To qualify at the GS-11, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to at least the GS-09 level in federal service having demonstrated experience in the following: developing and implementing drilling and geologic investigation; inspecting and monitoring the performance of damaged or distressed concrete or earth water storage and conveyance structures. You could otherwise qualify on the basis of Education having 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. You may combine specialized experience and education to meet the minimum qualifications.
To qualify at the GS-12, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to at least the GS-11 level in federal service having demonstrated 4 out of the 5 following: finalizing specifications for construction or drilling contracts; develop cost estimates; advise engineers in risk analysis; dewatering and unwatering programs; and prepare final-design data submittals, drawings, and construction geology reports.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Time-In-Grade: Current career or career-conditional employees of the Federal government, or former career or career-conditional employees, who have a break in service of less than one year, are required to meet the time-in-grade restriction of one year of Federal experience at the next lower-grade, with few exceptions outlined in 5 CFR 300.603(b).
You must meet all Eligibility and Qualification requirements, including time-in-grade restrictions and any selective placement factors if applicable, by 05/28/2024.
Education
This vacancy announcement allows substituting education for experience at the GS-11 grade level. You must submit a copy of college transcript(s) (unofficial copy is acceptable) to support claimed education if substituting education for experience. Transcripts must include the name of the college or university and date the degree was conferred. A typed list of courses, grades, semester/quarter hours, GPA, etc. will not be accepted. Non-submission may result in being rated not-qualified for the position.
This position does not allow substituting education for experience at the GS-12 level.
