Duties

Collect, transmit, download, decode and receive necessary data for its intended purpose as it relates to geology. Perform a variety of technical tasks, such as selecting samples, interpolating missing data, uncovering clear discrepancies, solving minor problems, and performing scientific analyses in support of higher-level scientists. Perform subsurface investigations such as drilling, trenching or other excavations. Assist in geotechnical construction activities and foundation mapping of geologic exposures in construction excavations. Assist in geologic construction documentation including maps, and reports.

To be eligible for consideration, you must first meet the Basic Education Requirement for this position: A. Degree: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining, or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. -OR- B. Combination of education and experience - course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, the HR Office must be able to determine that you meet the education and specialized experience requirement - this information must be clearly supported in the resume. To qualify at the GS-07, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to at least the GS-05 level in federal service which includes: collecting geologic samples and utilizing geologic software to input data. You could otherwise qualify on the basis of Education, having 1 year of graduate-level education that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work or superior academic achievement. You may combine specialized experience and graduate education to meet the minimum qualifications. To qualify at the GS-09, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to at least the GS-07 level in federal service which includes: assisting in geologic site investigations; performing permeability testing or analysis of soil or rock; and evaluating faults, landslides, or other geologic hazards. You could otherwise qualify on the basis of Education, having 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. You may combine specialized experience and education to meet the minimum qualifications. The superior academic achievement provision is to be used to determine eligibility for applicable GS-07 level positions of persons who have completed (or expect to complete within 9 months) all the requirements for bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a qualifying grade point average (GPA), class standing, or honors society. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education

This vacancy announcement allows substituting education for experience at the GS-07 and GS-09 grade levels. Transcripts must include the name of the college or university and date the degree was conferred. A typed list of courses, grades, semester/quarter hours, GPA, etc. will not be accepted. Non-submission may result in being rated not-qualified for the position.

Accreditation: Only education from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education is acceptable to meet education requirements or to substitute for experience, if applicable.
