This position is located in the Environmental, Safety, Health and Energy (ESHE) Division, United States Mint in Denver, CO. As an Environmental Protection Specialist, you will ensure the Denver Mint complies with current laws, regulations and ordinances regarding chemical products that are considered hazardous and serve as advisor to management on environmental and hazardous chemical product issues.
Duties
As an Environmental Protection Specialist, you will:
Plan and implement programs to ensure the Mint complies with all applicable requirements for use, storage, discharge, emissions, and disposal of hazardous chemical products. Analyze and interpret Federal and State law on a constant basis assuring the Denver Mint is in full compliance.
Assure legal requirements for storing, classifying, manifesting, labeling, packaging, transportation, and disposing of hazardous wastes are carried out. Determine the requirements for obtaining permits from local, State, or Federal regulatory agencies. Prepare and file the necessary documents to obtain and maintain such permits and ensure compliance with applicable policy and regulatory agencies.
Identify the need for engineering studies and projects to prevent or reduce emissions or discharges of pollutants or hazardous waste and coordinates with the appropriate management teams to determine what environmental factors need to be considered when facility projects are being planned. Interprets environment law and chemistry requirements for compliance issues as well as health and safety standards.
Submit all reports and findings to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as all other government agencies involved.
Have Contracting Officer Representative (COR) responsibilities for all environmental projects. COR responsibilities include: audits for Occupational, Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act dealing with contractors.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 14 days of the closing date of this announcement.
The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. Specialized experience for the GS-12 level is one year of experience at the GS-11 level or equivalent that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes:
- Preparing written reports giving recommendations for solving environmental issues or problems; AND
- Monitoring compliance or training on the preparation of environmental compliance reviews; AND
- Preparing environmental assessments or impact statements.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-12 you must have been at the GS-11level for 52 weeks.
