**A Certified Ophthalmic Assistant or Certified Ophthalmic Technician Certification from Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel Ophthalmology is highly desired but not required. **
Duties
Functions in a combined Ophthalmology/Optometry/Refractive surgery clinic whose services include examination, diagnosis, triage, and treatment of injuries and disorders of the eye by surgical and medical means
Perform diagnostic testing and ancillary procedures using specialized equipment related to eye care services as directed by the physician.
Triage incoming patients to direct urgent and emergent cases to physicians.
Maintain and update patient records with medical history, etc.
Provide instruction and technical guidance to ancillary health care personnel.
Provide assistance to the physician before, during, and after procedures by ensuring proper room setup, equipment setup, room cleanup, and restocking.
Under the direction of the surgeon, is responsible for the setup of equipment used for cataract extraction and any other operative equipment setups as directed by the surgeon.
Serves as first surgical assistant and as a scrub assistant to the surgeon in a variety of surgical procedures.
Assists surgeon with Refractive Laser Surgery such as PRK/LASIK/SMILE. Prepares room, equipment, laser, administrative laser logs, and preps patients for refractive surgery.
Performs setup of patient, instruments, and other equipment using sterile or clean technique as appropriate.
Requirements
- This position requires a Childcare National Agency Check with Inquiries (CNACI) background investigation.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to sign DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- This position requires the selectee to pass a pre-employment physical.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) Training and certification sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA). Advanced certification (e.g., Advanced Life Support) does not supersede BLS completion.
- This position may require periodic immunizations (other than the influenza vaccine) and tuberculosis monitoring.
- This position is Inclement Weather Essential. This means that you must be willing to make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
- This position requires a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccine and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes demonstrated experience conducting eye examinations; using ophthalmology and optometry instruments to ensure proper operation; AND performing various specialized tests and/or non-routine diagnostic or treatment procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Optometry, Ophthalmology, etc.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
