As a Sample Processing Technician, you are responsible for the initial screening of all samples (including: blood, sera, fresh and formalized tissues, vaccines, environmental samples, feces and urine) received at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL).
Duties
The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity. The duties may include, but are not limited to:
Manages approved documents to maintain Master Files in support of Quality Management System (QMS).
Authors, develops, and maintains Work Instructions, SOPs, Forms, and Incident Reports.
Inspects submissions for the accompanying documentation for agreement and accuracy in identification and labeling.
Receives and processes submissions for USDA Programs.
Conducts destruction of hazardous biologic vaccine wastes.
Enters and maintains submission information in various Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
Assists with import testing coordination.
Requirements

- Valid state driver's license is required at the time of application.
- Most of the work can be performed while seated and includes a moderate amount of lifting, standing and walking between laboratories.
- The position requires manual dexterity and coordination to work with fragile samples, forceps, scalpels, knives and pipettes.
- This position may require use of personal protective equipment and gear such as laboratory coat, masks or respirators, eye protection, and gloves.
- Occasional prolonged use of a computer, biological safety cabinet and needing to lift objects up to 50 lbs.
- The health status of personnel is monitored periodically using biologic and serologic test and physical examinations.
- Criminal Justice Information Services database check required for work involving Biological Select Agents and Toxins.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
FOR THE GS-05 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
Inspecting documents for required accompanying information and accuracy of data.
Entering and maintaining of information records in a data management system.
Managing files in order to maintain and retrieve approved documents.
OR Completion of 4 full years of education above high school level. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-05 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
