The position serves as an Animal Facility Specialist, in support of one or more research animal care facilities located in Bethesda. These facilities house rodents, rabbits, and non-human primates (NHP) as well as other species. Facility services include providing animal husbandry, veterinary care and quarantine services. The incumbent is responsible for managing all facility and husbandry aspects of one or more of these animal research facilities.

Duties

The incumbent is responsible for planning, prioritizing, and carrying out work; collaborating with peers to assure effective services; and otherwise ensuring continuous progress toward stated goals. The work involves responsibility for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of one or more NHP holding facilities. NHPs housed in these areas may have undergone extensive and complex surgical or experimental procedures such as transplantation and require intensive husbandry practices and clinical care. Participates in developing husbandry procedures as well as Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) for each species of animal maintained in the facility, including immunocompromised NHPs. Ensures adequate inventory control and maintenance of equipment and supplies and implements and oversees inventory control procedures. Assists in evaluating animal colony husbandry practices and in recommending new procedures to ensure animals are maintained under proper environmental conditions, are provided a nutritionally adequate diet, and are handled in a humane manner. Reviews research project requirements for the housing and care of NHPs and allocates facility resources, space, equipment, and manpower to meet expected research demands in collaboration with the supervisor. Participates in projecting, procuring, and managing equipment, supplies, repairs, and maintenance services for the facility. Participates in developing and evaluating future supply and maintenance requirements for the facility and associated support capabilities, determining future needs and requirements to assure sufficient resources are available to meet project needs, coordinating efforts to access storage or to obtain other services from outside sources to satisfy animal facility requirements, and preparing justifications, sole source requirements, and other documentation necessary for procuring supplies, equipment, and services. Prepares reports required by the NIH, U.S. Public Health Service, U.S.D.A., AAALAC, or other regulatory organizations as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Exposure to animal odors, dander, hair, pathogenic agents, bites scratches, cuts, and dust
  • You must be able to stand for prolonged periods on concrete floors and walk over rough and uneven terrain with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • The work involves some physical exertion such as prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting, and moving equipment, feed, bedding or animals weighing up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-11 level, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing administrative assistance in managing an animal facility, including procuring equipment, arranging repair and maintenance to facility equipment, and ensuring supplies necessary to provide daily care for laboratory animals in research are maintained and readily available, managing a database system to track, monitor and/or support animal facility, animal care and technical issues; identifying issues and problems in a laboratory animal care and husbandry facility. OR EDUCATION: completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or an LL.M., if related. OR Combination of Education and Experience: a combination of education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
