The certified Pharmacy Technician (Procurement/Inventory) at the GS-8 level is responsible for assisting in the oversight for all prescription and nonprescription medications, supply purchasing, and inventory in a highly complex area of Pharmacy Service at the GV Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center.
Duties
The duties and responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician (Procurement/Inventory) include but are not limited to the following:
Analyzes and reassess priorities to ensure workload demands are accomplished in the most effective, efficient, and economic manner.
Evaluates pharmacy activities to assist pharmacy managers in obtaining short- and long-range goals and objectives.
Assists pharmacy manager in identifying areas of effort duplication and developing solutions to streamline processes, reduce waste, save costs, and improve patient care.
Reports potential and/or actual medication errors.
Assists in quality improvement by participating in service process assessments and action teams and by continually seeking to improve the service.
Works constructively as a team member, assisting co-workers in tasks that support staff, visitors, and other customers in achieving service toward facility and network goals.
Maintains continuous oversight on the security of pharmacy inventory and storage areas and reports to management any inconsistencies or concerns.
Serves as lead ordering officer for Pharmacy service.
Trains new procurement staff on departments standard operating procedures and provides oversight to ensure competencies are met.
Provides guidance on all types of pharmaceuticals including controlled and non-controlled drugs within established VA ordering guidelines, policies, and procedures within inventory management specialized area with the understanding of proper budget utilization.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases.
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education or Experience: 1) None required. 2) For all grade levels and positions that accept both education and experience to qualify, equivalent combinations of qualifying education and experience that totals at least 100% are qualifying. The combined percentage is determined by adding total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level to the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level.
Certification: For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: 1) Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). OR, 2) National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.
Experience: Candidate must possess one year of experience equivalent tot he next lower grade level (GS-07) and demonstrate the KSAs below.
Certification: For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: 1) Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). OR, 2) National Health career Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT).
In addition to meeting the experience for the GS-08 level, you must possess the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
a) Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.)
b) Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures.
c) Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy.
d) Basic knowledge of pharmacy procurement, distribution and storage requirements to maintain a safe working environment. This includes not limited to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and DEA requirements and regulations.
e) Ability to assist in determining and modifying as necessary: ordering intervals, inventory levels and cost-effective ordering quantities from required sources based on current financial conditions in pharmacy, seasonal variations in drug usage, changing patterns in medical practice, delivery time requirements and urgency of medical need.
