Receives and manages pharmacy related veteran phone requests in the pharmacy telephone call center. Assists with the Choice/Community Care Program by verifying prescriptions as they come in to the e-pharmacy queue. Fills and labels medications for the pharmacist to check at the manual pick/filling stations. Works at the pharmacy hand out window and processes checked prescriptions for mail in the mail out.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Inputs patient demographics and prescription refill request into VISTA Outpatient Pharmacy Package.
Fills and releases outpatient prescriptions under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, carefully checking each prescription for accuracy during each aspect of the process.
Stocks or assists in the stocking of drugs in the pharmacy either as they are received or in preparing prepackaged unit-of-use drugs for use in filling prescriptions.
Performs expiration date checks and removes/replaces all out of date items.
Identifies potential problems with patient prescriptions and alerts pharmacists for possible clinical intervention.
Compounds extemporaneous preparations needed in the filling of prescriptions. Reconstitutes oral medications with a second review by a pharmacist.
Fills expendable prosthetic supplies upon receipt of an appropriate prescription or order. Provides temporary coverage of the prosthetics section when necessary.
Occasionally packages prescriptions and supplies for mailing to veterans in the correctly packaged envelopes for regular/registered mail.
Performs necessary checklist to power up and power down (boot the machine).
Trouble shoots problems causing downtime of the machine.
Works at manual pick station to process orders generated from the automated dispensing equipment.
Performs the proper labeling of the containers, including auxiliary labels.
Stocks and maintains the work area in a clean and orderly fashion.
Processes refill prescription orders.
Advises and helps educate patients, nurses, physician offices, etc. of all required information for correct and timely processing of prescription orders, eligibility requirements, status of orders, availability of specific drugs, and similar questions concerning the V.A. policies.
Maintains patient confidentiality of all records.
Maintains prescription filling documents and hard copies in the proper area. Maintains daily records and forms for completion of statistical reporting as needed.
Answers and/or returns patient telephone calls and resolves problems related to their medication orders.
Validates e prescriptions for Choice/community care patients.
Work Schedule: Rotating days/evenings/weekends/holidays, subject to change based on facility needs.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)
Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
Grade Determinations: GS6
Experience. One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
Certification. PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above.
1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
