Duties

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is looking for temporary employees to work as Materials Handlers in Billings, MT. A Materials Handler (WG-05) is responsible for a variety of day-to-day manual warehousing duties. This position is involved in packaging, refurbishing, storing, receiving, returning and warehouse shipping operations. Responsibilities include loading/unloading of equipment and supplies from transportation vehicles, stocking shelves, rotating inventory, monitoring stocking levels, assembling orders for shipment, refurbishment of supplies and equipment, packaging supplies for storage or kit building operations and transporting supplies while operating a vehicle not exceeding 26,000 GVW. Duties will also include accurately completing a variety of internal forms using ink pens and/or pencils along with data input using warehouse inventory tracking software. Qualifications

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations will be used in determining your qualifications. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in your resume. Screen-out Element: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. This must be verifiable on your application. To qualify for a WG-05: Experience in the operation of a wildland fire cache or warehouse in order to procure, issue, control, store and judge the physical condition of a wide variety of fire suppression and fire safety items within the wildland fire community as a warehouse worker. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Effort: Work requires standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. The incumbent is required to lift and carry items that weigh up to 40 pounds (8 kilograms) on a recurring basis. Heavier items are moved with weighted-handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. The incumbent may be required to work at a rapid pace for long periods of time. During periods of high fire activity, the incumbent may be required to work long shifts for periods of time up to 21 days without days off. Working Conditions: Work is performed in both inside and outside areas that may be hot, cold, dry, wet, drafty, and poorly lighted. There is regular exposure to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock or mechanized work areas. Work may require wearing protective clothing, such as hard hats, steel-toed shoes, rubber gloves, masks, and rubber aprons.

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
