The Supervisor Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist DRT (CT) has primary responsibility for clinical operations in the CT Section of the Imaging Service to Plan, direct and provide oversight of the delivery of CT service at the Charles George VA medical center 24 hours per day, seven days a week.

Duties

DUTIES: Verify and maintain staff proficiency through training, continuing education, coaching, and mentoring. Staff competencies include knowledge and skills related to the duties of a CT technologist, and general competencies of a VA employee. Serve as the principal quality manager for the CT Section. Provide oversight of technical and clinical quality with monitors and indices of quality, and initiate corrections as needed. Facilitate and oversee performance improvement activities, including study design, data collection, analysis, corrective actions, and follow-up. Monitor equipment maintenance and service, ensuring that equipment is maintained within optimal specifications. Serve as liaison to in house Biomedical Engineering, vendor service engineers, vendor account executives to address equipment repair, scheduled maintenance, technical upgrades and enhancements, and any other aspects of service to achieve optimal equipment performance. Foster a culture of job and patient safety. Elements include safe patient handling, infection control, and radiation safety with promotion of staff involvement and empowerment (e.g., "stop-the-line" authority). Implement processes that foster efficient patient flow including access, timeliness of exams, effective use of staff resources, integration with medical center operations, and systems redesign. Support educational opportunities, including career development, continuing education, and affiliations with training programs. Ensure that trainees are provided effective clinical experience that promotes technical proficiency, clinical acumen, and interpersonal skills. Develop a system for recognition and rewards for high staff performance. Apply knowledge and writing skills to create and update standard operating procedures and policies. Compose business reports such as resource and equipment requests, service agreements and other documents using lucid business writing. Use knowledge and leadership skills to foster effective labor relations. Consult with HR ER/LR Specialist and other leaders to achieve an effective balance of management and AFGE rights. Perform the technical, clinical and administrative functions detailed in the Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (CT) functional statement as needed to support direct patient care. Work assignments are implicit in the clinical operational duties listed above and in the annual Performance Plan with additional specific assignments generated in Imaging Leadership meetings or through personal communication. The incumbent is responsible to independently provide oversight of clinical operations in the CT Section: make work assignments to team members, coordinate workflow and adapt to changing circumstances, ensure overall quality of work, radiation safety and technical guidance. The incumbent is responsible for compliance with various relevant standards, policies, and procedures, and uses independent judgement and leadership skills to resolve the majority of issues. Work is reviewed in relation to goals and expectations outlined in the annual Performance Plan as well as additional contributions from individual initiative and incidental work assignments that occur throughout the rating period. Work assignments are implicit in the administrative duties listed above and in the annual Performance Plan with additional specific assignments generated in Imaging Leadership meetings or through personal communication. The incumbent is responsible to independently manage administrative duties: staff recruitment, leave administration, performance appraisals, equipment QC and other administrative functions. Work is reviewed in relation to elements detailed in the annual Performance Plan to include factors of completeness, accuracy, and timeliness. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography and Computed Tomography is required. Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS). Must be fully trained and working independently in the following modalities: General Radiology, Computed Tomography and Interventional Radiology Must have worked at least one year at the next lower grade. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-10 Computed Tomography (CT). This specialty modality requires specific knowledge of cross sectional human anatomy and its application in spiral, and/or, multi-slice computer tomography, inclusive of 3-D reconstruction scans, including drainages, biopsies, and peripheral vascular examinations. The technologist requires specific knowledge and training in the location, appearance, and function of the various major and minor systems susceptible to radiological illumination; to interpret the examination request accurately; to understand the functioning and inter relationship of the various organs; to use the methods and techniques which will identify organs appearing on the digital display monitor, or on film, and the various stages of the examination to judge the acceptability of the image and/or scan for diagnostic use and to emphasize the aspects of interest to the physician. [DRT assignments that include performance of independent duties in this subspecialty require advanced ARRT certification Preferred Experience: In charge and/ or leadership experience/ training. At least 1 year experience in CT Technology, Data extraction/ Analytics experience. References: VA Handbook 5005/119 PART II APPENDIX G25 Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work require long periods of standing, walking, and sitting. Work involves constant bending, lifting and twisting. The work requires pushing wheelchair and stretcher patients. Positioning patients who are unconscious or disabled requires considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Lifting of totally incapacitated patients is done only with the help of other employees. Wearing lead to protect self when assigned to fluoroscopic procedures or exams.
