This vacancy is for an Interdisciplinary Supervisory Survey Statistician/Supervisory Mathematical Statistician position in the Department of Commerce located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. The Census Bureau is accessible from the Metro Rail Green Line - Suitland Station. This Job Opportunity Announcement may be used to fill other Interdisciplinary Supv. (Survey Statistician/ Mathematical Statistician) GS-1529/1530-14, FPL GS-14 positions within the Census Bureau.

Duties

Plans and coordinates project activities for large-scale demographic survey projects. Leads a group of highly motivated technical experts in developing and executing production and research. Serves as a technical expert for various socioeconomic, demographic, or survey measurement projects. Oversees planning and implementation of quality assurances and quality control functions for data programs.

Qualifications

Minimum Education Requirement: For 1529 (Mathematical Statistician) Series: Degree: that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics. OR Combination of education and experience: At least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. For 1530 (Survey Statistician) Series: Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. AND In addition to meeting the basic entry requirements, you must possess the below specialized experience: Specialized Experience: For the GS-14, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-13 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes leading a project or team or serving as a technical expert on social, economic, or housing topics; interpreting or analyzing social, economic, or housing data and communicating findings to a variety of audiences; and conducting and coordinating analyses of large-scale demographic surveys. Education cannot be substituted at this grade level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer.
