About the Position: This position is located in the Preventive Medicine Department at Army Medical Center Womack, Fort Liberty, NC. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation This position is obligated. This position is a term position and may be extended up to a maximum of eight years.

Duties

Plan and conduct comprehensive surveys and evaluations to ensure that operations conform to all applicable occupational and health laws, regulations, and standards. Devise or work with engineers to develop control measures, such as changes in work procedures, ventilation systems, material substitutions, or use of personal protective devices where hazardous exposures are discovered. Utilize and adapt technically sophisticated monitoring equipment and state of the art instrumentation such as gas chromatographs and infrared analyzers to evaluate work environments where usual Industrial Hygiene sampling protocols are inappropriate. Research technical publications and coordinate with related Occupational Health Specialists in order to develop technical bulletins, instructions, regulations, training materials, and sections of field manuals for guidance of agency personnel. Review plans and specifications for contracts and construction, alteration, modification, and/or relocation of work areas or processes to ensure adequate engineering control are provided Plan work to be accomplished; prepare performance standards; evaluate performance and provide advice, and guidance to subordinates. Interview candidates for vacant positions, recommend appointments, promotions, or reassignments. Direct or oversee the accomplishment of a highly technical, diversified program and segments of programs and related changes affecting other units. Recommend corrective measures and controls including consultations with management employee relations personnel and initiation of feasible engineering controls.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • One-year supervisory probationary period required. A one-year probationary period is required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 45 pounds is required.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for a Supervisory Industrial Hygienist: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. OR Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. OR Certification from the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (BGC) formerly American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting surveys to determine the presence of potentially harmful chemical, physical, and/or biological hazards; preparing detailed written reports of survey findings; researching available industrial hygiene regulations/guidance; and providing training and/or consulting on a variety of industrial hygiene and/or occupational health topics. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
