Duties

You will monitor and control wind turbines from the plant using controller software. You will analyze equipment malfunctions by visual and auditory inspection or by means of test equipment. You will operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair diesel and gasoline engines. You will remove, dismantle, inspect, repair and install generators, motors and exciters. You will take command of all emergency situations and direct actions taken both in the power plant and response teams in the field.

  • You must qualify for and maintain a government license for all equipment in accordance with Navy P300 licensing regulation.

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of Electric Power Controller without more than normal supervision performing duties such as: 1) Operating various electrical power generating equipment (i.e., alternators, DC generators and control circuits, voltage controls, battery backup system, switchgear, and transformers); 2) Assist with operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing diesel and gasoline engines ranging from 3 cylinders to 16 cylinders per engine ranging from 40 H.P. to 1300 H.P.; 3) Assist with installing, testing, repairing and maintaining generators, transformers, converters, motors and associated equipment (i.e., circuit breakers, indicating and recording instruments, power and control cables and relays); and 4) Utilizing trade mathematics to calculate the amount of resistive and reactive loads, and phase relations of loads to identify unbalanced low efficiency loads, circulating current, or undesirable conditions. **NOTE: This experience must be fully and clearly supported in your resume. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Must be in generally good physical condition. Heaviest weight handled generally does not exceed 50 pounds. Work requires sitting, stooping, bending, kneeling, stretching, and standing for long periods. Must have good eye / hand coordination, normal hearing and dexterity in both hands. The incumbent is required to move about in the power plant, mechanical rooms, field work sites, and also climb ladders. Incumbent may be exposed to considerable noise. Works eight hour shifts during a 24 hour period. May be required to work from the ground level up to 50 ft. Required to wear personal protective gear for exposure to chemicals, solvents, or grease. May be required to lift up to 50 lbs. Heavy exertion may be required for short periods of time. May be required to sit, stand, kneel, crouch, stoop, or work in awkward positions for long periods of time. Must have good vision and the ability to use both hands and feet to operate a motor vehicle on the job. Possess a valid state driver's license up to and including 2 ton. WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposure to high noise area requiring dual hearing protection. Subject to call back 24 hours a day during rotation. Works 10-hour shift during 24-hour period on remote offshore island. Exposure to grease, fuel, vapors and high voltage electricity. Required to climb 90 foot vertical ladders and work from platforms or wind turbine nacelles. Periodically required to work in confined spaces, Subject to severe electrical shock, burns, cuts, bruises and falls. Much of work is outdoors in all kinds of weather, exposed to heat, dampness, cold and high winds. Unique to working at SCI, incumbent works an eight (8) day on / Six (6) day off shift, spending eight (8) consecutive days and seven (7) nights on SCI with lodging provided at government expense.
