You will serve as a ELECTRIC POWER CONTROLLER in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST.

Duties

You will monitor and control wind turbines from the plant using controller software. You will analyze equipment malfunctions by visual and auditory inspection or by means of test equipment. You will operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair diesel and gasoline engines. You will remove, dismantle, inspect, repair and install generators, motors and exciters. You will take command of all emergency situations and direct actions taken both in the power plant and response teams in the field.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Incumbent is entitled to a Remote Allowance.
  • Subject to call back 24 hours a during rotation.
  • Will work eight (8) days on/six (6) days off shift, spending eight (8) consecutive days and seven (7) nights on San Clemente Island with lodging provided at government expense.
  • Will work 10 hour shifts during 24 hour period on remote offshore island.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license class C or higher.

Qualifications

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to lead the work of a Electric Power Controller without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by: 1) Controlling and operating various electrical power generating equipment (i.e., alternators, DC generators and control circuits, voltage controls, battery backup system, switchgear, and transformers); 2) Operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing diesel and gasoline engines ranging from 3 cylinders to 16 cylinders per engine ranging from 40 H.P. to 1300 H.P.; 3) Installing, testing, repairing and maintaining generators, transformers, converters, motors and associated equipment (i.e., circuit breakers, indicating and recording instruments, power and control cables and relays); 4) Using common hand and power tools as well as special tools and precision instruments (i.e. injector testers, ignition timers, tachometers, torque wrenches and valve reseating tools, calipers, micrometers, snap gauges, load banks and force multipliers); 5) Interpreting and applying blueprints, technical manuals, illustrations, manufactures specifications, and oral or written directions; 6) Utilizing trade mathematics to calculate the amount of resistive and reactive loads, and phase relations of loads to identify unbalanced low efficiency loads, circulating current, or undesirable conditions.
