About the Position: Incumbent functions as a technical and scientific expert in this highly specialized diagnostic non-invasive service to adult patients with cardiac and vascular disease.

Duties
Provide complex cardiac sonographic studies in an accurate and timely manner (two- and three-dimensional sector scanning, color and pulsed Doppler) in adult patients referred to cardiology or through other department consults.
Oversee the organization, filing, and retrieval of cardiology patient medical information from clinic, laboratory, and professional correspondence for cardiology staff and fellow physicians.
Establish and review operating instructions for cardiology operating procedures in accordance with the American Society of Echocardiography and the Joint Commission (TJC) standards.
Establish, modify, and update data collection systems including computerized and standard filing systems of echocardiographic, electrocardiogram, and paper-based data.
Coordinate laboratory activities to maximize equipment utilization and patient care by sections and departments requiring these services.
Provide in-services to a varied group of hospital personnel to include medical students, nursing, house staff, fellows, and staff to ensure quality patient care.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation with Inquires (NACI) is required.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to sign DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- This position is Mission Essential. The incumbent will be required to report to work during times of contingency operations, natural disaster, extreme weather or other emergency situations.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
- This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.

Basic Requirement for Adult Cardiovascular Sonographic Specialist:
Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing routine or emergency echocardiograms; performing advanced cardiac ultrasound services or procedures; and analyzing echocardiography data.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
