Duties

Directly supervise civilian employees and military personnel, as applicable. Direct placement of equipment, personnel, application of fire extinguishing agents and rescue personnel. Perform firefighting duties such as handling hose, performing rescue operations, extinguishing fire, performing as a HAZ/MAT team member, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and emergency first aid as required. Ensure that personnel and equipment are in a constant state of readiness for immediate response to firefighting and rescue operations. Plan work to be accomplished, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work. Assign work and/or crew assignment based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments and the capabilities of employees.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Occasional Travel required (not more than 5%).
  • Position requires you to work 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) which may include working nights, weekends, and holidays. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position is a Designated Mission Essential Position. Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations. Incumbent must maintain a functioning telephone at their residence.
  • Incumbent must participate in the Fire Division's Fitness and Wellness Program that includes a cardiovascular physical fitness program IAW NFPA 1583 and DODI 6055.06.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • The work requires the incumbent to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid state and government driver's license is required. Emergency Vehicle Operator's certification.
  • This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program. Must sign DA Form 5019 acknowledging both pre-appointment and periodic random drug testing requirements.
  • This position requires you to successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
  • All applicants must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.05M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete an annual emergency vehicle operator's course. Emergency Vehicle Operator's certification is required within first year of hire.
  • Within the first year of occupying the position, you must obtain and maintain these DoD Firefighter certification levels: DoD Wildland Firefighter I and II, National Wildfire Coordinating Group Wildland Firefighter Type II Red Card Certification.
  • This position is obligated. You will be asked to sign an agreement acknowledging that you are aware of the obligation and willing to be displaced under reduction in force procedures upon the return of the former incumbent.
  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes directing a crew in firefighting activities or in standby duty at the station; performing or supervising fire hazard inspections in a variety of facilities; responding to hazardous material incidents or providing preliminary medical care to victims. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS: This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain ALL of the following Department of Defense, IFSAC or Pro Board certifications: Airport Firefighter, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, HAZ/MAT Technician and Incident Commander, Fire Officer II; as well as EMT certification and NWCG FF II red card. (NOTE: You must attach copies of ALL of the certifications to your application). Within the first year of occupying the position, incumbent must be able to obtain and then continue to maintain the following DoD Firefighter certification levels: DoD Wildland Firefighter I DoD Wildland Firefighter II National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Wildland Firefighter Type II Red Card Certification. This position also requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Basic or State equivalent Emergency Medical Technician Basic certification. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of the certifications to your application). Maximum Entry Age (MEA)The MEA for Firefighters is 37. Applicants not appointed by the last day of the month in which that individual reaches their 37th birthday shall not be appointed or assigned to these positions. Maximum Re-entry Age An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57, if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position. Waivers to Maximum Entry Age MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: Waivers to MEA for firefighters must be approved by local Command.
