Duties

Duty Locations are: Mount Rainier National Park: Longmire WA As a Masonry Worker the duties will include preservation maintenance, stabilization, restoration, and repair to historic and non-historic stone masonry guard walls, culvert headwalls, bridge parapets, chimneys, steps, curbs, and stone buildings. The position will be required, at times, to work without supervision. As directed by the supervisor, you will assist in 1) maintenance, repair and restoration of damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features. 2) implement prescribed preservation treatments (site documentation, prepare mortar mixtures, cut and set stone, finish mortar joints and tooling to replicate and blend; may use a mini excavator, to reset wet/dry laid stone, etc.); and 3) recording the location, time, materials, and labor involved in the treatment process. You will be responsible for selecting the proper tools and materials and maintain responsibility for keeping all tools and equipment utilized in a clean, serviceable, and safe condition. You will also perform rough carpentry and painting work. Work will be conducted in a safe manner for the protection of self and fellow workers, particularly when using mechanical tools and equipment. Assignments involve strenuous exertion including hiking, climbing steep slopes to project work site, bending, lifting heavy objects (rocks of up to 50 pounds), stooping, and kneeling. Physical Demands: Performs heavy lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted, carrying stone, mortar, and aggregate, scaffolding, and other small equipment. Normally required to climb ladders or scaffolding to heights of from 5 to 30 feet and bend, stand, and kneel for long periods of time. Sometimes required to hike long distances and climb steep slopes. Working Conditions: Most work is performed outside with exposure to all types of harsh weather conditions. Assignments involve exposure to dust and dirt while mixing mortar, screening soil, backfilling, and driving to and from outlying areas. Incumbent may be subject to cuts, bruises, insect bites, danger of falling when on ladder or scaffolding, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading equipment and materials. Incumbent will be provided and will be expected to wear prescribed personal protective equipment. Some contact is necessary with chemical agents in the nature of cleaning fluids and preservation compounds, some of which are considered hazardous. Work with chemical agents will be conducted within approved manufacturer's specifications and in accordance with the unit's precautions. Mount Rainier is an active Cascade volcano encased in over 35 square miles of snow and glacial ice. The 14,410' mountain is surrounded by lush old growth forests, spectacular subalpine meadows and a National Historic Landmark District that showcases the "NPS Rustic" style architecture of the 1920s and 1930s.
