This position serves as a Medical Support Assistant who provides support and technical assistance in the management and administration of the reception of patients, scheduling appointments and related call center functions for the hospital. The position is located within the Pine Ridge Service Unit in Pine Ridge, SD. The position reports to the Supervisory Medical Support Assistant.
Duties
Schedules appointments and updates patient demographic information.
Provides customer service to patients and co-workers.
Maintains confidentiality and security of patient data and information.
Performs a variety of receptionist, clerical and record-keeping duties.
Receives and greets visitors and telephone callers and determines the nature of the inquiry or call.
Serves as a point of contact for the Call Center concerning all aspects of the computerized appointment process.
Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate the following education and/or experience as outlined below for the grade level(s) you are applying to. Any specialized experience must be equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the tasks as identified.
GS-05: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Receiving and greeting visitors and telephone callers; knowledge of an electronic appointment system to schedule appointments; gather information from customers to perform data entry into a database; assist customers in completing forms and answering general questions; review documents for accuracy; initiate requests based on the information received; and performing record keeping duties. Or four (4) years of education above high school. Or a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for the position. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.
GS-06: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Interviews patients and determines the nature of the call or visit to schedule appointments or initiate appropriate patient paperwork; enter, retrieve, and extract data from a computerized data system to schedule, change, and/or cancel patient appointments; coordinate patient care based on medical provider referral for purchased referred care services; capture patient demographics and insurance information to update an electronic Patient Registration system; review documents for accuracy, explain processes, test preparations and/or policies to patients; review, correct and initiate admission forms as needed for appointments; multi-task and navigate through difficult patient scheduling situations with excellent communication and customer service skills; and perform a variety of receptionist, clerical and record-keeping duties.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
