DEA Intelligence Research Specialists support counter drug investigations, within the U.S. and abroad, working behind the scenes to protect their communities.

Duties

This position is located in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).The incumbent assists Senior Intelligence Research Specialists and Special Agents by performing preliminary research, analysis and evaluation of raw intelligence data for segments of large projects and studies. As an Intelligence Research Specialist, work assignments may include, but not limited to: Collects and catalogs new drug law enforcement intelligence information in a file or automated system according to class and topic. Receives or gathers intelligence reports and data in support of drug law enforcement investigations. Provides input on drug-related aspects of political, social, or economic trends or situations, such as the common methods used to smuggle narcotics into the country. Utilizes national and international information systems and databases, as appropriate. Evaluates all available intelligence information pertaining to a complete but limited topic or assigned area of study, or contributing to a larger study in an area, especially in the area of drug law enforcement, but also in areas such as one related to political, economic, social, technical or military conditions in one or more foreign countries. Alerts supervisor or higher-grade specialist of new information or emerging trends that merit further examination or study. Produce written strategic, operational and tactical intelligence products. Provide oral briefing to senior level managers and policy makers. Collects information through various means, including the debriefing of witnesses and informants. Collects and catalogs new drug law enforcement intelligence information in a file or automated system according to class and topic.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Employment is subject to the successful completion of a background investigation. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret clearance.
  • Must sign a mobility agreement that confirms your understanding and agreement to accept relocation to any location depending on the needs of the DEA and the Intelligence Program
  • Polygraph is required.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all of the required qualification requirements described below by the closing of this announcement. If you are qualifying based on education, you MUST submit a copy of your transcript with your application that clearly displays conferred degrees and/or relevant credit hours. All applicants must meet one of the basic qualification requirements described below for this position. For the GS-07 level: This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service. Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate experience with the following: selecting, abstracting, and compiling data from specific sources; and evaluating and making preliminary analyses of data; -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: The experience requirement for the GS-7 level may be met by one full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the duties of the position, -OR- Superior Academic Achievement: Successful completion of all the requirements for a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement (SAA). In order to be creditable under this provision, SAA must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position and is based on: Class Standing: Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class, based on completed courses, Grade Point Average: Applicants must have a grade point average of: 3.0 or higher: Based on 4 years of education or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher: Based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society: Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies. -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. For the GS-09 level: Must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level or pay band in the Federal service that includes performing the following duties: data processing, data tracking and file management; locating, compiling, and developing information to fill intelligence gaps; and performing preliminary research, analysis and evaluation of raw data; -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Master's or equivalent graduate degree OR 2-full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.B. or J.D., if related, -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. Education

If you are relying on your education to meet qualification requirements: Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications. PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One year of graduate education in considered to be the number of credit hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
