This position is located in Valles Caldera National Preserve, in the Interpretation Team.
Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately the beginning of January to the middle of December, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year (from approximately December 18-December 31).
Duties
Major duties include but is not limited to:
Manage the geospatial data of Valles Caldera National Preserve and Bandelier National Monument.
Analyze geospatial data in support of management and program needs of two parks.
Produce geospatial products that supports operations at two parks and across the continuous ecosystem between the two parks.
Collect geospatial data in the field to improve the parks' geospatial data.
Collaborate with park employees on projects that require geospatial data.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-05/13/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
You must meet the BASIC educational requirement for at least ONE series *AND* meet the ADDITIONAL Specialized Experience and/or Education in order to qualify for this position.
BASIC EDUCATION for the Geographer GS-0150: Must have successfully completed a degree in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. -OR- Must have a combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as listed above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
BASIC EDUCATION for the Biologist GS-0401: Must have successfully completed a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. -OR- Must possess an equivalent combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major, as listed above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
BASIC EDUCATION for the General Physical Science GS-1301: Must have successfully completed a degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
-OR- Must have an equivalent combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors listed above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience, or additional education.
BASIC EDUCATION for the Cartographer GS-1370: Must have successfully completed a degree in cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites). -OR- Must have an equivalent combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as listed above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND IN ADDITION (Specialized Experience and/or Education)
To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following OPM's Qualification Standards by close of the announcement:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of qualifying specialized experience includes but is not limited to:(1) leading implementation of established protocols and training others in scientific methods (2) using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) programs to collect and manage data, and preparing maps as assigned by higher-graded professionals (3) drafting work plans and implementation strategies.
-OR- Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
-OR- Combination: Successful completion of a combination of education and specialized experience as described above. NOTE: Only graduate level education in excess of one year may be combined with experience. To calculate your percentage of qualifying graduate education, divide your number of semester hours in excess of 18 semester hours by 18 or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study. To calculate your percentage of experience, divide your months of qualifying specialized experience by 12. Add the two percentages. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.
To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following OPM's Qualification Standards by close of the announcement:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of qualifying specialized experience includes but is not limited to: (1) Managing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database and database management system, including the conversion of thematic source maps from analog to digital form using appropriate hardware and software. (2) Assist with maintaining hardware, peripherals, Global Positioning System (GPS) units, network, and GIS operating systems (typically both UNIX and DOS). Following established protocols, ensures the security and currency of GIS hardware, software, system administration and maintenance. (3) Use GIS related hardware and basic computer requirements and techniques. Ability to develop, maintain, and operate complex computer systems that include a wide range of peripherals including digitizers, scanners, printers, and associated field tools such as data loggers and GPS units, in order to acquire and use the full range of tools to produce and maintain databases. (4) Use computer operating systems (e.g., DOS, UNIX), software application packages for GIS (e.g., ARC Info, GRASS), and database management (e.g., dBase, Access), and the skill to apply these technologies to effectively accomplish the GIS program.
-OR- Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
-OR- Combination: Successful completion of a combination of education and specialized experience as described above. NOTE: Only graduate level education in excess of 2 years may be combined with experience. To calculate your percentage of qualifying graduate education, divide your number of semester hours in excess of 36 semester hours by 18 or the number your school uses to represent 1 year of full time graduate academic study. To calculate your percentage of experience, divide your months of qualifying specialized experience by 12. Add the two percentages. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.
If qualifying with education, one year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from school, 18 semester hours should be considered an academic year of graduate study. You must provide copies of your transcripts.
Specialized experience is experience that equips the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. You must provide hours per week and to/from dates (month/year) on your resume.
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using
education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level(s) of this announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a
non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted.
An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.
Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience.
For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.
