This position is located in Valles Caldera National Preserve, in the Interpretation Team. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately the beginning of January to the middle of December, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year (from approximately December 18-December 31).

Duties

As an Interdisciplinary (GIS Specialist), you will: Manage the geospatial data of Valles Caldera National Preserve and Bandelier National Monument. Analyze geospatial data in support of management and program needs of two parks. Produce geospatial products that supports operations at two parks and across the continuous ecosystem between the two parks. Collect geospatial data in the field to improve the parks' geospatial data. Collaborate with park employees on projects that require geospatial data.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/25/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. Since this is an Interdisciplinary position, you must meet the BASIC educational requirement for at least ONE series *AND* meet the ADDITIONAL Specialized Experience and/or Education in order to qualify for this position. BASIC EDUCATION for the Geographer GS-0150: A. Must have successfully completed a degree in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. OR B. Must have a combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as listed above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. BASIC EDUCATION for the Biologist GS-0401: A. Must have successfully completed a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Must possess an equivalent combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major, as listed above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. BASIC EDUCATION for the General Physical Science GS-1301: A. Must have successfully completed a degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR B. Must have an equivalent combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors listed above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience, or additional education. BASIC EDUCATION for the Cartographer GS-1370: A. Must have successfully completed a degree in cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites). OR B. Must have an equivalent combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as listed above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND IN ADDITION (Specialized Experience and/or Education) To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following OPM's Qualification Standards by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE - At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Managing GIS database and database management system, including the conversion of thematic source maps from analog to digital form using appropriate hardware and software. Assist with maintaining hardware, peripherals, GPS units, network, and GIS operating systems (typically both UNIX and DOS). Following established protocols, ensures the security and currency of GIS hardware, software, system administration and maintenance. Have knowledge of GIS related hardware and basic computer requirements and techniques. Ability to develop, maintain, and operate complex computer systems that include a wide range of peripherals including digitizers, scanners, printers, and associated field tools such as data loggers and GPS units, in order to acquire and use the full range of tools to produce and maintain databases. Have knowledge of computer operating systems (e.g., DOS, UNIX), software application packages for GIS (e.g., ARC Info, GRASS), and database management (e.g., dBase, Access), and the skill to apply these technologies to effectively accomplish the GIS program.Experience equivalent to the GS-9 may be professional work at the developmental or trainee level. Lower graded technician/assistant work alone is not qualifying for this series. You must provide hours/week and to/from dates (mo/yr) on your resume. You must include hours per week worked. OR EDUCATION - Successful completion of at least 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. You must include transcripts. OR Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. When combining education with experience, first determine the total qualifying education as a percentage of the education required; then determine the experience as a percentage of the experience required; finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. For example, six (6) months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level (50% of the experience requirement) and 45 semester hours of progressively higher level GRADUATE education directly related to this position (50% of the education requirement). NOTE: Only graduate education in excess of 36 semester hours (2 years) is creditable in combination with experience. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
