You will serve as a POLICE OFFICER (HANDLER/TRAINER) in the FORCE PROTECTION DEPARTMENT of NS NORFOLK SECURITY DETACHMENT.

Duties

You will serve as a Working Dog Handler in a law enforcement environment. You will inspect vehicles and personal property for unauthorized weapons, explosive devices, and suspicious packages. You will draft documents (e.g., detailed reports, forms, citations) to record law enforcement incidents. You will conduct investigations (e.g., preliminary, non-criminal) to determine warranted action.

  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

  • Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level. This requirement is called time-in-grade. Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
  • The DON does not employ individuals for Law Enforcement Officer positions who have been convicted of a crime of domestic violence on or after 27 November 2002. You must submit DD Form 2760, Qualification to Possess Firearms before appointment.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You are required to possess and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This position is considered Key/Emergency-Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support to ensure the success of combat operations or the availability of combat-essential systems.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You must meet the qualifications and be certified to carry a firearm. You will need to maintain firearm proficiency.
  • You must successfully pass an initial, annual, or any required OPM, DoD, or DoN mental and emotional stability screening, Physical Ability Test, and medical screening.
  • Completion of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) Uniformed Police Training Program is a condition of continued employment. Employee will be required to sign a continuing service agreement (CSA) prior to travel to the academy.
  • You must attend or be a graduate of the Department of Defense Dog Training School at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position, your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are being considered. Therefore, we encourage you to be clear and specific when describing your experience. Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing the following duties: 1) Conducting inspections of buildings and vehicles utilizing dog to locate explosive devices; 2) Conducting preliminary and support requests to search out narcotic substances, apprehend, and take into custody suspected violators; 3) Performing on/off leash obedience and controlled aggression in congested areas; 4) Responding to emergency calls, complaints, and other calls for service during watch; 5) Providing care, maintenance, and training to Explosives Detection Dog (EDD) in accordance with instructions and guidelines; and 6) Conducting checkpoints and roadblocks as directed in effort to reduce criminal activity. **NOTE: THIS INFORMATION MUST BE SUPPORTED IN YOUR RESUME TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION.
