This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Modified Direct Hire Auth, Section 1109; PL, 116-92 dated 12/20/2019to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: This position serves as a Roads Maintenance Worker for the Directorate of Public Works.
Duties
Perform a variety of helper level tasks associated with the trades of Roads Maintenance Worker.
Working with Roads Maintenance Workers of higher grades, performs tasks preparatory to work of journeyman and accomplishes routine and repetitive tasks.
Assist in construction of manholes, catch basins, steps, patches holes or worn places in asphalt pavement.
Repair fences, painting crosswalks, operating leaf machines, picking up trash, using rakes, shovels and other hand tools.
Exercise care and safety to avoid damage to equipment and work surroundings, i.e., trees, shrubbery, walks and drives.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- The employee will be required to successfully pass physical examinations as required by Federal and Office of Safety and Occupational Health Administration guides.
- The employee must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license in order to operate a government owned vehicle.
- One year trial/probationary period may be required.
- This position is designated as essential during inclement weather.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Roads Maintenance Worker ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common maintenance and repair work as appropriate. I can perform maintenance and repair work on manholes, catch basins, and roadways, patches holes or worn places in asphalt pavement, repair fences (steel security and wrought iron), paint crosswalks and traffic markings. I operate leaf machines, clear catch basins and picks up trash. I use rakes, shovels and other hand tools. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort - Performs heavy lifting up to 50 pounds with assistance in carrying materials. Required to stand and bend while working and to climb ladders and scaffolds.
Working Conditions - Works inside and outside, in all types of weather. Is exposed to dirt, dust, and soot in part of work. Is required to wear and/or use protective equipment in accordance with established health and safety regulation and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
