This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for certrain personnel in the DoD workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: This position serves as a Roads Maintenance Worker for the Directorate of Public Works.
Duties
Perform masonry, concrete and asphalt work and operates motor vehicle and engineer equipment in performing maintenance and construction work.
Operate gasoline or diesel-powered road sweeper equipped with heavy rotary brooms. Drives sweeper along streets and roads, following established route and maintaining appropriate speed for effective operation.
Drive wheeled type tractor with towing attachments such as auger and leveling blades to set fence posts and forms. Connects, adapts, and adjusts attachments.
Drive truck with 4-ton capacity or over, which may have up to ten-wheel drive.
Requirements
- Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Roads Maintenance Worker ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform the full range of Roads Maintenance Worker tasks under general supervision including inspecting asphalt to determine needed repairs, planning, laying out, and repairing road surfaces. I work on my own initiative under general supervision subject to occasional inspection. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Performs heavy lifting in carrying materials. Required to stand and bend while working and to climb ladders
and scaffolds. Heavy physical effort is used by the operator in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Because of the location of some of the controls and attachments, the operator is frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside. Is exposed to dirt, dust, and soot in part of work. Some work is performed in
all types of weather, often in an open driver's seat or platform, on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces, and forests. The operator
is exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning. Subject to noise, vibration, dust dirt, and fumes from the
motor and exhaust. May be required to wear and/or use protective equipment in accordance with established health and safety
regulations and SOP's.
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this position, you must meet the Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
