The Utility Systems Operator in the Plant Operations unit of the Maintenance and Operations Section of the Engineering Service performs on a rotating shift that provides 24 hours-per-day, 7 days-per week utility systems management and medical center support. During irregular tours, nights, weekends, and holidays, the incumbent acts as Operator-in-Charge and makes independent decisions without supervision to provide emergency maintenance assistance
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Exercise direct control over services provided to the medical center, including digital control of all air handling equipment impacting temperature and humidity; steam supplied for sterilization, laundry production, building heating, and cooking; chilled water production for air conditioning; and remote operation of the emergency water supply tower.
Makes the rounds of the Steam Boiler Plant, Air Conditioning Plant, fuel storage tanks, and cooling towers to visually check all related plant equipment, Take hourly reading and maintain the plant operations log, overtime log, and Utility System Operator check-in log.
Check the plants and operating machinery throughout station, from the air conditioning plant at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of each shift.
Coordinate engineering emergency calls and communicate by radio, telephone or in person.
Maintain the complete water treatment program including: cooling towers, chiller water and steam distribution systems, and the boilers, per instructions and chemical company recommendations.
Calibrating instruments, collecting samples at various locations, performing analysis, making chemical feed adjustments to maintain control limits, and repairs to chemical distribution systems.
Perform all plant housekeeping tasks (sweeping, mopping, waxing, etc.) in plants, machinery rooms, and storage areas.
Preparation for annual internal and external inspections such as safety valve testing including lockout, tag out, and disassembly of boiler manholes, hand-hole plates, and internal parts.
Participates in the performance management process and develops an understanding of the VA's mission and organizational goals as they apply to the incumbent's position and the Engineering Service
