Located within the Grounds/Transportation Unit at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Vancouver, WA, this position operates vehicles in excess of five tons, with five axles coupled with a fifth wheel to a trailer/trailers 28-50 feet in length. This position requires a current and valid state-issued Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with the following: Passenger (P) endorsement Hazardous Materials (H) endorsement Doubles/Triples (T) endorsement No air brake restrictions

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Transports laundry, general cargo, and a variety of specialized medical equipment between VA divisions, other Federal agencies, and locations throughout the region Operates vehicles in excess of five tons, with five axles coupled with a fifth wheel to a trailer/trailers 28-50 feet in length Operates truck-tractor equipped with air brake connection to trailers. Operates vehicles with a G.V.W. up to 73,000 lbs., although the typical run is 52,000 G.V.W. Safely transports hazardous materials Applies knowledge of multi-speed rear axles, auxiliary transmission and weight balance relative to the steering axle Evaluates conditions to operate oversized vehicles with limited maneuverability including limits of roads, traffic hazards, commercial height, width, weight, and length regulations Follows regulations regarding commercial heights, widths, weight, and length regulations Properly loads, secures loads, and distributes cargo weight Operate large tractor-trailer combination on steep downhill grades, utilizing knowledge of dual brake system and forward gear ratios. Determines appropriate route for oversized vehicles, considering the condition and load limits of roads and bridges, scheduling weigh points, and assessing traffic conditions Performs other related duties as assigned DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 4:00am to 12:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: May be authorized for highly qualified candidates

PHYSICAL EFFORT: This position requires strenuous, heavy lifting. Operator must lift and stack heavy boxes of supplies and push and secure large heavy carts filled with linen. Must lift-push-pull various special medical machines. Operator climbs onto tractor to connect service lines and lower landing gear. Subject to continuous reaching, bending, and turning. WORK CONDITIONS: Working conditions for this position are hazardous. Operator must drive on steep terrain during periods of hazardous weather. Vehicles operated vibrate and jerk. Operator is subjected to stress of driving oversized vehicles for prolonged periods of time in congested traffic with limited maneuverability. Driver is exposed to vehicle exhaust and loud engine noise. COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE (SCREEN OUT): A current and valid state-issued Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for the position. Your Class A CDL must have the following: - Passenger (P) endorsement - Hazardous Materials (H) endorsement - Doubles/Triples (T) endorsement - No air brake restrictions NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your CDL driver's license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you will be required to provide a copy of your current and valid state-issued Class A Commercial Driver's License. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
