This position transports laundry, general cargo, and a variety of specialized medical equipment between the Divisions, other Federal agencies, and locations throughout the region.

Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include:
The incumbent operates vehicles in excess of five tons, with five axles coupled with a fifth wheel to a trailer/trailers 28-50 feet in length. The truck-tractor is equipped with air brake connection to the trailers. While the G.V.W. is 73,000 lbs., the typical run is 52,000 G.V.W. This position requires a Class A Commercial Driver's License with the following endorsements: Combination doubles and triples, air brakes, passenger, hazardous material and commercial general skills. Must be knowledgeable with combination system including coupling mechanism, air supply control, and braking components (S-cam-wedge-disc spring). Must be knowledgeable with the Federal Hazardous Materials Table and the instruction for their safe transport. Must be knowledgeable with multi-speed rear axles, auxiliary transmission and weight balance relative to the steering axle. Must have a thorough understanding of commercial heights, widths, weight, and length regulations. Since these vehicles are oversized and have limited maneuverability, greater skill and knowledge is required of this driver in the evaluation of condition and limits of roads, and assessing traffic hazards. Position requires expert knowledge in load distribution and securing of loads and maneuvering large truck-trailer combination in confined areas that are congested with other traffic. Operator must be skilled with dual brake system and forward gear ratios when operating on steep downhill grades.
The operator receives orders from the Motor Vehicle Operation Foreman. Is responsible for the proper loading, securing, and weight distribution of cargo. Is responsible for determining appropriate route for oversized vehicles considering the condition and load limits of roads and bridges, scheduling weigh points, and assessing traffic conditions. Is responsible for timely and accurate completion of the Interstate Drivers' Commercial Log as required by the Department of Transportation. Driver works alone, using established schedules and set procedures and is required to be on schedule at all times.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) - A Selective Placement Factor (SPF) has been identified for this position. PHYSICAL EFFORT:
This position requires strenuous, heavy lifting. Operator must lift and stack heavy boxes of supplies and push and secure large heavy carts filled with linen. Must lift-push-pull various special medical machines. Operator climbs onto tractor to connect service lines and lower landing gear. Subject to continuous reaching, bending, and turning.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Working conditions for this position are hazardous. Operator must drive on steep terrain during periods of hazardous weather. Vehicles operated vibrate and jerk. Operator is subjected to stress of driving oversized vehicles for prolonged periods of time in congested traffic with limited maneuverability. Driver is exposed to vehicle exhaust and loud engine noise.
