Incumbent is assigned to the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS) of VISN 17, Heart of Texas Health Care Network. Incumbent serves as a Motor Vehicle Operator (MVO) for Operations Section, Engineering Service. CTVHCS provides services to Austin, Waco, Temple, Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs), VISN 17 VAs, private homes, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, local hospitals and doctors' offices throughout the CTVHCS catchment area in a timely and courteous manner.

Duties

Major duties include, but not limited to: Incumbent transports as well as loads and unloads patients, employees and officials; patient effects; medical, pharmacy, laboratory, and dietetic supplies; laundry, mail, and employee and patient records between CTVHCS sites, OPCs, buildings, local hospitals, nursing homes, and other VA and Non-VA facilities. Incumbent operates gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles with a typical gross weight of 22,000 to 32,000 pounds and capable of carrying loads weighing up to four tons. Typical vehicles include cargo box trucks with power take-off operated lift/gates, passenger buses equipped with air brakes, fiveforward speeds, up to eight driving wheels, as well as hydraulic wheelchair lifts. Passenger buses include dual use vehicles up to 36 feet in length and 13 feet in height with a capacity up to a maximum of 30-passenger seating, 15-litter capacities, or 10 wheelchair position. Incumbent loads and unloads the vehicle by hand, sometimes requiring help from other workers and equipment making sure the vehicle is not overloaded and the cargo and passengers are properly loaded and protected from weather, damage, and injury. The driver assists the accompanying medical personnel in loading, unloading, and securing litter and wheelchair patients, bringing patients to their scheduled destinations, and, if necessary, remaining with patient until another staff member can assume responsibility. Incumbent will be required to sign for certified mail and patient belongings and valuables, and deliver such to appropriate officials and individuals at destination point. Incumbent cleans and washes vehicles, checks tire pressure and inflates as necessary, and checks liquid levels (oil, gas, etc.) and adjusts as appropriate. Driver's vehicles are spot-checked on an intermittent basis for abuse and to ensure preventive maintenance has been accomplished. Driver's vehicles must be neat and maintained with a high level of cleanliness. Incumbent operates other vehicles and performs other tasks as assigned by the Fleet Manager/Operations Supervisor. Incumbent is in very frequent contact with health care system management, professional and nonprofessional personnel in other medical center operations, plus outside medical facilities. Communication is necessary to coordinate with work schedules, patient appointments, priorities, and to fulfill other assigned duties. Incumbent must be courteous at all times and have the ability to work effectively with people in a hospitable manner.
